Why are you replacing the oil pump and valve covers?

this was a package deal,
this is the Complete timing chain service kit 3.6 2004-2007 Cadillac STS CTS SRX.
the oil pump and valve covers are revised units..

Oil pump is probably included because if you remove the lower chain guide, the bolts go through the oil pump and the oil pump req. replacement according to the holden documentation.

After what I gather is a massive job - Do you believe holdens quoted prices are warranted and would you do it again?

Id say no. On average, Holden seem to be doing it for around 3000.

We used to sell the kit for about 1200 retail. Which included EVERYTHING.

When mechanics outside of Holden quoted for the job, a lot of them needed to buy the specific tools for the job. When I last worked behind the counter about a year and a half ago, those tools were starting to get sold a lot more to general workshops, cutting down on the labor cost for them.

At this stage, car out of warranty etc, id certainly shop around.

Thought I would tack this quick question onto this thread rather than start a new one, my daughter is shopping around for a VE wagon at the moment, what year did Holden get on top of this timing chain issue, is she better off buying one with the SIDI engine or are some of the later pre SIDI engines ok, I don't want her buying one them finding she has a several thousand dollar repair facing her.

Unfortunately it happens to all makes and models of the Holden VVT V6's.
Cheap oil and long intervals between servicing are the main culprits. We do the work for $999 for the normal kit in Dandenong, but can supply Genuine or Cloyes kits for interstaters.

anyody know anybody in the sydney area that isnt 2k+?
Revhigh, supplied my complete kit, I wouldnt imagine anyone willing to do the labour side of the job itself for less than 1k, its a full days work for the average person
