amp and sub probs

    Ive just changed all the wiring to my subs and put new boot matting sides and all the stuff to make it look clean now my subs are not pumping geez Ive looked at every thing would u know what this prob is

    Could be many things. Did you disconnect the battery before doing all the work? Otherwise you have simply blown a fuse somewhere.But it's a hard thing for someone to diagnose over the internet, it may be something really simple, that someone would pick up on straight away, if they were to look at it in person.

    no i did not but i checked the amp fuse and the power cable fuse ??????

    Is the power light on the amp coming on?

    there is power/protector light its not on would that be the power or just a protector light
    ..............ive just checked all the wireing no brakes cuts its all hooked up its got me beat

    have you put the remote wire back on? Have you got your earth and remote wires mixed up?


    Get a multimeter.....

    Check for continuity between the earth terminal and the chassis.
    Test for volts between the battery terminal and earth, then test for volts between remote and earth (h/u on for remote volts)

    No volts on battery terminal : Test continuity of ALL fuses on that line.

    If you get the correct readings, the amp should function.

    If the amp does not power up, it's possibly got a bad solder joint on the terminal strip (internal). I had this on a new pioneer amp - I pulled it apart and was shocked at the poor soldering standards. I used to think pioneer were pretty good..... wouldn't trust them now.

    correct polarity on the wiring from the amp to the subs?

    got amp and subs cranking but now well had it cranking new prob (amp terns off & on )

    well...what was the problem with it not switching it on? they may be related.

    hey,
    i was just wondering if there is a way to connect a sub to the stock head unit in a vt commodore?

    i have pulled out the sub and amp from my old car and i wish to install it into my vt. i have a 10 stack cd player so i'm not too keen on buying a new head deck just to connect a sub to.

    can anyone help me out?

    Yes Mitch.....theres plenty of other threads covering this topic.

    Basically, you have two options if you want to keep the stock unit and add an amp / sub.

    1) Buy an amplifier with high level inputs, this means you can tap into the rear speaker wires and run them to the amp. You'll still have the rear speakers connected, youre just using the wiring so the amp knows what to play.

    2) buy / install a line out converter (LOC), these convert speaker wires into RCA cables (high level to low level). You still tap into the rear speaker wiring but you connect the wires to the LOC, then you use RCA cables to connect to your amp.

    As far as power and earth go, you do this as normal. The remote cable is a little different though, you'll need to tap into a wire either behind the stereo or in the fusebox / dash area that has power when the key is turned to accessories. This is so the amp turns on and off with the stereo.

    @VP CALIBER sounds like a dodgy ground. i installed a sub and amp in my car, murpheys law, didn't work. light didn't come on the amp. after a while i fiddled with the ground and it started turning on/off. moved the ground point to a better, cleaner location, worked straight away.

    Do you have the car running when you are testing everything? I made the stupid mistake of just having my key turned to accessories when i was trying to get my sub and amp to work... when its just on accessories there isn't enough to power it all (sometimes)

    try it with your car actually running, this happened in my VL

    well boyz i don't know what ive done lol but it works betta than before lol it had a buzz through the subs thats gone now ./ thay sound stronger now it all sounds good now don't ask how coz i don't know ... but ive found new prob back right hand side speaker stop working but ill fix that up when i get the time

    problems back brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr amp terning off and on again its really anoying i may just find a new place for the ground might be it we will see

    Have you tried a different earthing spot and made sure the earth is tight?
    Also, have a look at the fuse at the battery, sometimes they come loose inside the holder and can cause connection problems.

    Might be a good starting point to turn the stereo on, play some music at low volumes and check the amps voltage with a multimeter (put it on the + and - terminals of the amp). Do the same test at the battery terminals and compare the results. It should be within 0.5-1.0 volt of difference.

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh i found it i was in such a ruch of getting the 2 subbies in i bent the metal on the back of 1 sub and the wires were touching but guess whats back the bloody wineing noise through the speakers bloody helll

    Earthing spot? usually interference like your experiencing is caused by a bad earth. Try a new earth spot (like the rear seatbelt bolt), sand back the area around the hole to bare metal and tighten that bolt up real good......if youve got the amp earthed to the parcel shelf or rear quarter panel area then its a good chance thats your problem.....always earth to a solid peice of the car.
