Book says.. use 10w/30 if unavailable use 20w/50 or 15w/40.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't 10w-40 have better high temperature protection than the recommended 10w-30 ?

Autobarn have a special on 10w40 Castrol MAGNATEC for 20 bucks that will work just fine.

It falls within the spec ranges recommended by the manufacturer so it shouldn't be a problem but then you never really know until you try it.

Sounds like it would be fine for a VX as long as your engine doesn't burn too much oil. I'd choose something thicker in very hot weather myself.

10w40 is fine for the Ecotec.

As stated in the book, don't use anything lower than 10w30. Depending on the mileage, consider using something thicker like 15w40 or 20w50. Don't pay too much attention to the brand, as long as it meets the spec of the vehicle it's fine to use. There's way too much brand loyalty when it comes to oil.
