Whenever I turn the radio on/off, the automated antenna erects/retracts and makes a clicking sound at the end of the process. My best guess is the motor is winding the antenna more than it should and the clicking sound is teeth jumping? I haven't a clue how to fix that :/

Would it be worth just disabling the motor, since I'm looking at getting a new head unit, that might render the feature useless? Not to keen on that though.

The mast needs replacing. It will cost around $30 and is not that difficult to replace.

mine makes a clicking noise what comes from the right hand side of the steering wheel in the dash, thought it must of been normal but guess not, seeing the aeriel is on the left hand side i thought it would click over there but nope, guess i need a new mast too then? doesnt annoy me too much though, or could it cause more damage?

Ever since I got the VY, five years (110,000 k's) ago, it's done this too. When it gets to the fully up/fully down position it gives about four little clicks. Mast isn't bent and doesn't have any problems. Doesn't worry me.

I put up with the clicking for about a year and finally replaced the mast, I must say it is a lot better without the clicks.

Yours don't sound like a mast problem, the clicking could be coming from the BCM.

ah is that bad? how would i fix this then?

EDIT: used to hear it every time i would press the up or down button for the antenna on the stock head unit, and also when turning the car off once its finished going down all the way you hear an even louder click what comes from the direction the antenna actually is, not on the right hand side of steering wheel, so maybe i have both problems?

My VT Calais used to do that. I thought it gave it character. It didn't bother me.

I don't know if it's bad or not but the BCM does control the power antenna.

It's not a very pleasant sound IMO, sounds like something is about to break. I can deal with it, but if I can fix it I will.

I noticed part of the telescopic rod wasn't extending, at least it appears as such. So it could be grit or something stuck in the antenna, instead of the motor over winding, I dunno.

A while ago my antenna stopped retracting all the way, by about 3-4 inches. It was a VERY SLIGHT bend in the mast, after carefully straightening it, it's fine, but still clicks.

I got mine on ebay but I noticed some at AutoPro the other day for around $49 I think. Cheaper on ebay, as per the link I post earlier.

Late Update; My mate erected the antenna and with a cloth greased it up, de-erected the mast and repeated the process a few times. No more antenna clicking!

My best guess is the motor was struggling to push up a section of the mast which may have been jammed. Hope that helps.

wondering if anyone has fitted a shark fin style antenna instead of the shitty
electric one. my problem is can i get away with no hole and where would i route
the cable. or even better are the ones you stick on the inside of the window
    any good.

I'm sure someone has fitted a shark fin antenna. What's the point of the question? It will work like an antenna, you can fit it if you have the will/money to do so.

You need a hole, the metal roof is grounded to the battery, no way around that.

You would route the cable behind the cars trim (under the roof lining, down a side pillar, behind the dash and so forth).

Can't comment on them, haven't used one. As I said in the other thread, search is your friend. Use Google, I'm sure thousands of people around the world would have commented on the window antennas.

the point of the question is i want to chat with someone who has actually done it.
drilled hole, sealed paint to stop rust etc. Are there antennas like car kit aerials that dont use holes and work through glass etc. i am not stupid. why would i stuff around searching google when i can use a forum. otherwise what would be the point of forums. sorry to get narky. but i thought talking to like minded people would be the go. I am big on doing ALL work myself so just want to get the best
    information.
