I wouldn't suggest wearing sunnies unless they have shatter proof lenses. Last thing you need is shards of glass in your eyes :-\
The way i look at it, if it complies with the AS for helmets.... even a cheap helmet.... if you are going to hit anything hard enough to break it, it's only a brain bucket.... saves the coroner having to scoop your brains off the road... that stuff STINKS!! If you are going to fall off a bike an expensive helmet might offer a bit more padding, but in the end you will end up with the same result, a dribbling vegetable pissing and shitting your pants rocking back and forth not knowing what day it is. I have been through several helmets over the years..... my $80 ebay helmet has outlasted the Shoei i paid a lot more for.
My first couple of helmets which are ADR approved were like $40, they protect pretty much just as well as my V3 Fox Carbon fibre, only problem is they're probably a one crash thing, and they weigh a tonne! MY current helmet I can't even feel it being on haha.
I bought myself an RXT helmet years ago - I've fallen off multiple times and am yet to break my face, so I'd say they'd do the job for a learner. This guy isn't racing FMX guys, he's puttering around in a paddock. I bet the worst thing that'll happen is he'll lose momentum up a hill and topple to one side.
At the end of the day it usually only takes one decent hit to the head and your screwed. You have to ask yourself if you do stack it would you prefer the best protection you can get for your head or would you be happy chancing it, the answer to that question is the answer to your original one. If it was me there would be no way I would take a chance with my head, even if I'm not the smartest or prettiest thing around.
Due to the pointy nose of MX helmets, its not recommended to wear them on road bikes as they can actually cause more damage by the pointed nose grabbing the ground while your sliding and ripping your head sideways. MX helmets are made that way as most MX impacts are front on impacts from going over the bars, so frontal rigidity is priority. Road bike helmets are more made for when you hit the deck and slide (not that any of this will effect the OP as he's only learning and wont be breaking any speed records or having massive offs)
ALL helmets are a 1 crash thing. They are all designed to protect for ONE impact. Then to be disposed of. If you read the tags they will usually say if you even drop it from over 1m then it should technically be replaced as it could have been weakened.
Wow this is one controversial topic. I didn't get a chance to go to the store today, but I'm going tomorrow and I'm going to see what the guys there say. Oh and I wouldn't wear anything less than a full-face helmet. I don't intend to go at any decent speed until I feel comfortable controlling the bike. Only once I feel competent and my brother agrees will I hit the road, with his supervision (L's only). The roads out where he is are very long and very straight, he is a few hundred k's west of Townsville, in the middle of damn well nowhere. And if I don't ever feel competent than I simply don't touch the roads, this is a holiday, I have no intention to end up in a hospital. I would be lucky to get maybe a few hours on the bike so I kind of doubt I will touch the roads. Currently I am looking at the Rjays helmet, at least they are a known brand with proper AS approval. I fully expect any falls I have will be in the first or second ride while I learn how to get the bike moving, so probably not more than a huge grass stain.
Any helmet is useless if its not fastened properly. I learned this lesson really quickly when I saw a mate loosing all his front teeth when he face planted and his helmet flew off. Had to have his jaw rewired (?), not sure what was the real surgery done. Go for Arai and Shoei helemts and here in Brunei its a bit pricy.
Agreed. And your mate is an idiot for riding without fastening the helmet, but his lesson was taught the hard way.
side topic here. Does anyone know why Shoei / Arai helmets are MORE expensive without the stickers? I dont have more then 4 shops to compare prices here in Brunei. but if you are shopping for helmets, why are the 'stickered' ones cheaper than the plain ones? I am asking bcoz it hard to match up suits with helmets
do you mean a plain helmet compared to a helmet with a graphic on it?, here in australia the plain ones are normaly a touch cheaper compared to a replica/graphic type helmet, only other price difference is between different models. to the OP as most have said get one with the australian standards and one that feels comfortable on your head, i find the arai suits the shape of my head good.
Well I went into Small Wheel Deals in Lawnton and had a look at the $60 helmets, and I don't think I'll be getting one. It fit pretty well, didn't move on my head, didn't squash my ears, but this is the (alleged) Australian Standards sticker.... From what I can gather and what Munz posted it needs to be this or the cops will have me, and I can't use at Willowbank if I want too, I will go to that other place tomorrow.
its simple mate you buy wat suits you so long as it has the aus standard sticker on it it gunna save ya head this carry on with shoie and aria helmets is a big toss as a company name kbc manufacture most of these helmets for these companies anyway same as fox and 661 all made in the same factory just labeled differently ,carbon compisite helmets are strong yes but transfer way to much force back to the head the biggest difference with these helmets is the foam they use inside we have been buyin motox helmets for my son for fifteen years now so i have got some idea wat im sayin , cheap helmets are very safe now days some are even better than some very expensive helmets , buy wat suits ya its your choice and your dollars just take it easy when ya startin out .
Well I got my helmet today, a Rjays Razor, which seems to be thier bottom of the line helmet, seems OK, bit tight around the forehead, a bit headache inducing if I concentrate on it to much. The helmet was only $100, but I kind of wish I got the $150 model from the other store just because it didn't have the tightness on the forehead, it was also Rjays but a few models up. But hell for what I want it will be good enough. Also going to buy a textile jacket tomorrow, looks nice and I can use it for general jacket use if I take the armour out. My ugly mug in the helmet, helmet has no up/down or sideways movement, and fits snugly against my fat cheeks.
Congrats on what appears to be a good choice. Has the proper credentials, full face helmet to protect the jaw, snug fit (well sounds a bit too snug).
Tip: Any helmet should always be as "snug" (tight) as you can handle it, bordering on two small, when you first get it. That allows for it to "bed in" to your head shape and never be loose. Also, NEVER let ANYONE else wear your helmet!
looks tops. atleast youll be able to have other uses for it aswell. eg: track days/ gokarting etc. can you also get other visors to put on the front? eg if your going to be out in the sun alot having a tinted one? and good luck with finding a top.
