Are all the 4L60E transmissions interchangeable?

The transgo st2 kit makes the pwm redundant from what I can gather, so even with pwm/gradual tcc lock enabled in the tune it will still engage with no delay. You may even be able to purchase the valve separately and fit it when doing a trans service.

Always heard that early vr was different but never actually seen a 4l60e with only 12 pins. Either way it won’t be hard to make the later model transmission work. I’d be going the later trans as they’re better from the get go and less likely to need a rebuild. You don’t NEED the lockup to work although it’s nice and prolongs trans life a little as it reduces heat.

Just depends on your intended use for the car.

I don’t believe a lot of what I read on forums. There are heaps of posts here saying that the vt-vy v6 transmission wouldn’t work with the earlier vs because of electrical/TC differences but that’s not the case as I found out.

Thanks EYY, I usually try to get as much advice as possible and pick the common threads. Only online so far has only turned up the VX one on Gumtree, but will keep looking. He only drives the car, and not always in anger. From what he told me he has no 3rd and 4th,might suggest he gets a really really tall diff and use it like a power glide :).

My concern would be the PCM setting a fault code with the different wiring configuration. There may be a way around these issues but I'm not sure what it is. As EYY says mechanically it can be made to work, the biggest hassle is the cooler lines been larger and on a different angle on the later model transmissions.

Just get that one rebuilt...most are wrecked or high mileage will need rebiuld anyway.

Picked one up cheap myself supposedly rebuilt/remanufactured...planned the usual corvette servo, shiftkit, deep pan & large transcooler...oil is burnt to **** so may need rebuild.

Shift Right,Craigs Transmissions,Re-Nu Automotive are good to deal with depending on area you're in & price.

There are guys around who do ‘patch ups’ for $400-500 if you take the trans to them. They’ll fix what’s wrong, nothing more, nothing less. No 3/4 is common but depends how long it’s been driven like that. There will be crap all through the trans from the stripped frictions and the steels are probably damaged too.

I had a trans built for $1800 that included recoing the TC which is probably not a bad idea while it is out. If you rebuild one you can have a number of upgrades done cheaper than it would cost while the trans is still in the vehicle.

He just got back to me, it’s 9/93.
Being 93 I thought it would have been the last of the TH700 trans. But if electronic, must be the very first of the 4L60e with 12pin plug.
Easy way to tell is by looking at cables on throttle body. Throttle, cruise if equipped, and TV if its a non-elec trans.

I thought '94 only was 12 pin (mine is). Do you think if it was a 95-newer trans that the valve body and wiring could be swapped into a later casing to keep the 12 pin?
Maybe that would throw a code because trans has additional solenoid that isn't getting powered up. But maybe not

Looks like it’s pretty straight forward. Performabuilt is a trans shop that’s specialises in the gm transmissions and where I got 99% of the info when rebuilding my trans last month

Here’s another thread - looks like pwm solenoid just needs to be permanently open so that the other tcc solenoid will still do it’s job. https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/1672821-pwm-4l60e-into-94-car.html

Plenty of info around, mostly on ls forums. Transmissions are the same apart from bellhousings, input and output shaft and extension housings I believe between most if not all gm vehicles of a particular year.
