It's not illegal to go through an amber light though is it?

As far as I know, cameras work on a 0.2 second timer after it goes red. If your car is over the white line > 0.2 seconds after the light goes red, you get done.
Old thread....

The question about amber lights is asked on learners permit tests, if I’m not mistaken, so we should all know the answer.

You must stop at an amber light if it is safe to do so... or $448 & 3 points

As for red light cameras, according to the following web site, red light cameras don’t take photos of cars crossing traffic light stop lines on an amber light.

Another perspective of the whole shmozle

I'm pretty sure there is a leeway of 0.2 seconds. Pretty sure I've been close at times :)
Whilst you might be pretty sure there’s a leeway of 0.2 seconds, I’m absolutely certain there isn’t - that’s the purpose of the yellow light - a signal to stop unless it’s unsafe to do so

Many many moons ago late one night I whipped up to the local milk bar to grab a pack of smokes.
As the shop was due to close very very soon I ran a yellow light rather than stop. I hadn't noticed the police car behind me.
Yep, I got the blue lights and a quick sample of the siren. The nice officer claimed I ran a red light, I protested that the light was yellow when I entered the intersection. He agreed but countered with the argument that the light changed to red just as my rear wheel crossed the white line.
No amount of discussion about the subject was going to change his mind.
Yep I got a fine and points for running a Red light.

Should also add it’s an offence to go through a yellow light too
Same penalty applies to that of a red light, points and all (well in Vic It does anyway)
