Another update - machanic rang and said, intermittant solenoid problem on the starter motor.
Would that put up a check engine light?...
Get the thing back tomorrow anyways - will check the codes to see if any there.

i heard this was something that the gearbox will do for economy, just shift straight away to second when you put your foot down and drag out second, but if you push the power button it will stretch first gear. Just what i heard from a mate and from trying it out it seems pretty accurate.

    VR Auto tans leak

Hi, i noticed my sons car was leaking auto tans oil and thought it was coming from the pan gasket. No oil above that. I changed the gasket, didn't tighten bolts too tight...still leaking from same place, the front of the pan near the filler tube. The filler tube is damp but no visable signs of fresh oil leaking. Can you help please?

    Dr Bob

    Hi DrBob,

I have been experiencing some problems with my VS statesman as of late and i am hoping that you may be able to narrow it down to a few things.

Basically the car starts and idles fine, but when i put my foot on the accelerator the car splutters and basically looses power. If i push further down on the accelerator i hear an awful clunking noise coming from the engine. I have been told that it could be the fuel injectors and that they need a clean, also someone mentioned it could be the accelerator coil pack and have tested the secondary ignition with a multi meter and it reads a 5.98 which is as far as i know ok.

Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks heaps in advance,

    Drbower

    Faulty Key Reader VT Commodore

    Hi Bob,

Here's a curly one for you - Thought I'd warm you in advance - I am a 54 year old woman, blonde but not totally dumb !!! LOL:yeah:

I have 2 3 button ignition keys for my 98 VT and one stopped working the other day and I had to get RACQ to get me started so I could get home to the spare key.

I rang the Auto Electricians who said needed a new key head NPS - dropped in on Friday arvo and after 4 attempts using 2 different computer gismos they could not get the new key head to work.

Went back today (Monday) as they got some new ones from Holden and the same problem - the new key head will not load the code to work the buttons, it will start the car when turned but does not make the doors open or lock. :bang:

Now I know you are going to say - don't use the buttons just unlock with the key and start with the key - now here's the thing - about 6 months ago the car would not start in the driveway - RACQ came out and tried and said that something had gone in the key barrel and to start the car we would need to press the open button on the key head then turn on the ignition. They said it was not really a drama if we were happy to do that - it would save about $500 to repair it and at the same time it is like a built in immobiliser.

So that's what we have been doing - till now - I am thinking that that little hiccup may be the cause of the new key head not being able to load it's code and make the buttons work !!!

Auto Electricians said it showed no error codes but that to get the key head replaced I had best go to Holden as they have more sophisticated computer equipment that may show the problem.

What are your thoughts on the matter - any suggestions ? ? ?

I am looking for the cheapest way out of this as we are strapped for cash, as everyone is at the moment.

Thanks for having a read and hopefully some clarity with the situation.

    Warm regards

    Tillpott:D

    pulley bearing perhaps? alternator bearing?
in short, it's broken. take it to a trans shop
just buy a V8 loom. save yourself a few days figuring **** out
close but no. what you're talking about is driver abuse mode. it's about box longevity, not economy

it could be a few things, hard to say without seeing the car but...
the key reader itself could be at fault but if the key starts the car after it sitting for 10 minutes it is programmed. this could just mean the central locking is faulty, i would suggest taking it to a dealer & see if they will diagnose it for you
    what area are you in?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi

I have a VS Senator 215i, stroker (orig) and was wondering what oil to use in her and is the sump/capacity the same as a 185i/5.0 litre?. Also what filter should I be using

She has done 90k so far...

I have used ****s Super Synthetic 5/40, but am a little unsure if I will use it again. I know they originally made the oil for Mobil and it aint chaep at $64 for 5 litres.

    Is 5/40 too thin???

    Thanks Mate

    wl caprice
    8 way drivers seat

G'day Dr Bob, 1st post here so l apologise if it has been asked before, but l searched high & low for an answer - with not much luck.

Problem is: our WL Caprice's drivers seat only works every so often:bang:, l have a couple of blokes that are handy in the electronic department, they fiddled with the wires & plugs without disconnecting them, but they are worried about the side airbag, ie can they disconnect the module & inspect the modules guts for any "dry joints", dicky micro switch etc, if we disconnect the battery will this stop the airbag alarm?

Our local Holden dealer wants $400 for a module (bit steep), do you know if these modules are repairable and are they made in Australia ie - is there a generic substitute?

    Cheers
    Pssd

Update, l had to disconnect the battery to clean the tray it sits on & clean the terminals, when l reconnected it & started the car l could move the seat, so l got the missus to put the seat into her driving pozzie, also the car has to be running when we try to move the seat, this is not the case with the passengers seat we can move it whenever.

The drivers seat does not remember any driving positions ie key head related we only have one key between us .
