I found a local auction for a VX, and I was interested as for the right price, really cheap, it might have quite a few good bits I can use, maybe even a decent motor.
    The catch, no key.
So let's say I bought the car, get a tow truck to drop it in my yard, short of replacing the entire ignition system, or getting another key cut, $$$, how can I assess the motor and trans?
Can I run the motor without the computer?

    Cheers,

The engine relies on the computer to run so the answer is no.

Pretty sure you can put start you bastard in intake then you just have to crank it somehow wont run long though might be able to run a coulple of cables directly from battery to starter motor to crank it

    Gday,

I remember I used to be able to use a screw driver to arc the starter terminals, but those old cars had no computers. The actual car is on Gray's online up in Hamilton, ends today I think.
I think its funny about getting tips to pinch a car of thr k ternet, Holdens and Ford's have a long reputation of being easy to pinch, if I really wanted to know how to pinch a holden I reckon I would ask your average pre schooler... Lol.

I just don't know why the car was abandoned, maybe ran outta petrol, arrived at their dealers house, or blew the engine...

Maybe if its cheap enough I'll just bid and wreck it without trying to spend money getting a key cut...

Reasons for cars to be abandoned are many.
Add more reasons if you wish

    Ran out of petrol
    Engine died
Flat tyre no spare no RACV
Driving unregistered and police took the rego plates
    Unroadworthy and police stickered it
Tow truck would cost more than the car is worth
Repairs would cost more than the car is worth
Hooning and cost too much to release from inpound
    Owner went to jail
Owner does not know it has been abandoned because he lent it to a good mate
    Too many fines
Left on side of road and some low life stole battery and other parts

Like I said, add more reasons if you wish

Well there is a fairly happy ending to this tale. Picking the car up from the council impound I chatted with the council employee who organised getting the car towed.
The story is the previous owner, p.o, ran out of fuel, then let rego lapse. Car was parked on street, owner told to move. Owner didn't, car got towed. Owner failed to appear after 6 months.
So that's not too bad. When I got the car home I looked her over, a recent service sticker says 324,000kms, OK, so she's a high km engine.. Bummer.
But looking over the car, she's in great nick, and was driven by a female owner.
The engine looks good, oil is black, and coolant is green... So far so good.

I removed the lock barrel and will score a key head, barrel and key set from a wrecker for around $100 odd.
If all goes well, the engine will be OK and I might even keep the car whole and eventually get it on the road when my current one dies....

    Tally so far:
    $109 purchase car
    $35 graysonline fee
    $150 trailer hire
    $150 replacement ignition -maybe

    G'day,
I made quite a few enquiries with Holden, what a hassle, having to take the car to them, then ordering, having to buy two keys, around $150 each, then a locksmith, more $$$.

I phoned a local wrecker yesterday and they will sell a BCM, key barrel, key head and key to suit for around $100.

I like that option, then I can use a scan tool to work out doors and that later, at the moment I just want to see if the motor is decent enough to use.

    See how we go..

Have you tried contacting the original owner... may be you can buy the original keys off them for something between a $100 or $200. If you can get them, it’s gotta be bless hassles that way ;)
