Auto 2nd gear to 1st gear

In Drive or Sport mode the auto starts in 1st. In manual mode you can start in 2nd if you want. It won’t hurt it driving in Manual mode that’s correct

It's quite safe because you can't manually select a gear that the car can't handle, i.e you won't be able to select 1st when you're doing 100 km/h or 6th if you're only doing 50 km/h.
Therefore, if the car lets you select a particular gear it's OK to use it.

btw; you can actually start driving in 3rd if the conditions are right!

My GenF2 GTS starts in 2nd gear regardless of whether it's in sport mode or normal. You can select 1st gear manually but the next time you stop it reverts to starting in 2nd gear. My understanding is that is the standard way the gearbox functions and to change it you need to get the PCM tune modified.

My VF2 SS starts in 1st but spends as little time as possible in it. In drive it is super lazy, changes to 2nd super quickly and very reluctant to kick down to 1st unless you really boot it as very low speed.... otherwise it just pulls 2nd and goes crap.

I think 2nd in the A6 is way too long. Thats what's nice about the new 8 or 10sp autos, they can always be in the right gear making the car feel nippy at any speed. When I get stuck in 2nd at say around 30-40, the car feels like a slug.

Simple to get a mild to wild trans tune, $500. Makes a bigger difference to performance than a custom tune on a stock engine.
