hey, I am looking to purchase an ss soon and am wondering what to get. the auto or the manual. ive never really driven manual so dont know how much of a learning factor there is. any answers will be appreciated. hopefully looking for someone that was in a similar boat (never driven manual). main concern is stop start stop start in traffic. thanks
Get a manual man, they are fun as hell! can change when u want, ive got a aftermarket heavy clutch and a cam and i still love driving it in traffic or on the open highway!
I was in the same boat when I bought my Calais. I'd always only had manuals, then bought an auto. To start with I loved not having to change gears. Now a couple of years I hate my auto. Wish I had a manual again.
See where and how long you drive ie work etc and make a list of the pros and cons of each transmission. If you're a lazy bugger like me get an auto lol then again the quickest cars in the world are auto Sent from nowhere and everywhere.
vote 3 for the manual... to be honest all these people that say "i got an auto because i live in the city and don't want to change gears all the time" i really don't get it its not hard and the fun you can have with it when your out of the traffic... well there is no comparison and even more so when you have a little power under your right foot.
Nah mate isnt hard at all, esp when u drive it everyday, i went from my auto v6 of 3yrs straight into my manual only took about a week to be good at it
Yeah mate will you be fine, will just take a week or 2 to get used too, im gunna assume you have a manual lisence alrdy?
I never drove a manual. Bought an ssv. 1 week later all good. And I live in the center of Adelaide, so it was a steep learning curve. Now I've got a cam, heads diff etc there is nothing like driving a manual. Especially at the track where I just went on Friday - 6500rpm changes, down/up shift when you want, the car does what you want when u want it. No comparison, manual all the way
when im driving from job to job I dont mind my 5speed, but when I get caught up in traffic I hate every second of it....
Love being out in the country! No debate about it. Automatic AFM SS is hard to find out or way.. Mate get the manual! Feels better, more fun to drive and sounds better with an exhaust!
Another vote for manual Had a cammed & stalled ssv previous and although that was nice to drive, ive found my manual E3 clubby even more fun to drive.
I always wanted a Calais manual, but did not buy one because I have never owned an auto, and have no intention of doing so. I was surprised when I compared the features of my MY11 Series II SV6 to the MY10 Calais. The differences were few, as follows: 1. I have LSD as standard, Calais did not, and still does not. 2. Same with sports tuned suspension. 3. While the MY11 Calais has 18 inch wheeels like the SV6, the MY10 Calais had 17 inch. 4. The Calais has projector headlamps, the SV6 does not. 5. The MY11 Calais has chrome finish body side mouldings that the SV6 doesn't, but the MY10 Calais didn't have them either. 6. The Calais has the three window trip computer cluster that the SV6 does not. However, I have fitted a Calais cluster to my vehicle. 7. Calais has leather wrap gear selector, which my SV6 does not. 8. Calais has rear park assist, but my vehicle came with rear park assist and rear view camera; the latter an option in the Calais. 9. MY10 Calais had cloth seats with leather side bolsters. MY11 has full leather seats. SV6 is cloth. 10. My SV6 came with a rear centre seat armrest and twin front map lights, just like a Calais - even though the original features list did not include these. A quick assessment shows that there is not much difference between the feature list. I have installed the Calais cluster, could install leather seats if I wanted them and have not even considered the issue of projector headlamps. My MY11 SV6 has all the Calais features that I would want, but with a manual and cheaper. 2.
OP what kind of traffic driving do you do? Cause if I were doing say the Sydney M5 everyday, I would not own a manual, because the clutch would last about 3 months. Active select is pretty good these days mate, don't worry too much. Bear in mind, I am an automatic boy, I love them and these days they are excellent performers. I must admit, I have never owned a day to day manual. But then most blokes on here have never owned an auto daily either.
I learnt to drive in a manual Corolla and hated my first 20 hours on the road. Once I got the hang of it, driving a manual became a joy rather than a task.
