Manual No argument. CAn't beat the feeling of the gear change and contol with a manual. Auto YAWNS reminds me of my parnets and grandparents car. Too much power lose too.
THe VT wasnt stock! No wa it would win id put money on it! Not bias cause i own a VZ its just not possible in a stock VT. Weighs more etc .
Well that's what I would have thought. The VZ beating the VT, but it was the other way around. Yeah if it was a 0-200kph race the VZ would have gotten the VT in the end. But on a 400-500m strip, the VT crossed the finish line first. Yes the VT has extractors, rebuilt auto with stage 2 shift kit. But cop this, my VT SS is stock and is 0.20 second faster then his VT on the 1/4 so much for his gearbox. I would like to see some evidence where a manual is really better then an auto. As everytime I have seen acceleration comparisons between manuals and autos, the autos win hands down all the time. Unless you are racing around a track or doing top end speed testing. Here at our local 1/8 strip, the guys in their supercharged or NA worked 308 in Toranas, remade FJ Holdens, etc all are using the good old powerglide gearboxes (2 speed auto). All the other VH-VLs, mostly VKs are using the three speeds with the BCM shifters, etc. I agree manuals are fun to drive with, but I am over that stage.
your tight on the money with the straightline drag bits......an auto utilises the torque to get the car moving more efficiantly and quicker than a manual will..... on a race track a manual will kill an automatic tho just because of gear selection they both have their advantages and disadvantages
manual all the way... around town they are much more efficient, autos are slightly more efficient in the VS on the highway as they are doing less revs at the 100kph than a manual in which the final gearing is a little lower. (and the auto is 'locked up' too) can't beat a manual for control etc. I would have to say that an auto makes a lazy mans drag car but!
i dont agree with that statement...... say if you throw a cog or tooth.....1st gear in a getrag 5 speed (vs-vy) is $390, so you cant exactly say it is cheaper if something goes wrong, clutches yes but gears no. now days u can get an acdelco replacement transmission for $1700, heavy duty ceramic clutches and stage 2 shift kit what else can you ask for...... they even give you a 4 year 200,000 Km warranty thats how confident they are in their tranmissions
so do we all argee that for going quick in a straight line a worked up auto is best? ever if its just a street car?
I hate driving autos, I feel like I'm going to crash simply because I'm not actually doing anything. It's like "I'm missing something... what am I missing? Somethings wrong! Help! Oh yeah, auto."
Manual for me. I have never owned an auto, though have had to drive some as work vehicles. An old friend of mine was a veteran car salesman. He generally gave good advice. His philosophy with Commodores was buy a manual new for about $1,000 less that the auto. Spend 10 - 15% less on fuel. Keep it for five years or more, when it will be worth about $1,000 more than the equivalent auto. And if something goes wrong, the auto is likely to cost much more to repair. This advice has proven very accurate. Plus I like driving, even in traffic. Everyone to his own, but I have never "enjoyed" driving an auto.
Add to that you wear brakes out far less in a manual because you have this cool thing called 'engine braking' which is actually usable in a manual!!
also depends on the transmission and how strong it is... you can use the auto for engine braking, its all a matter of what your cars intended for...... and the brake pads in an auto are actually cheaper cos your clutches are round about $200 to replace too:hit:
