Hi all,

I have a rattling, which my mechanic says is coming from my balance shaft bearing.
He says he doesnt have time to change it for me (im guessing this is a bad sign)

Is it a big job, what's involved and how much should i expect to pay to have it fixed?

anyone know someone who would do the job north of the river (perth) ?

Vp series 2
huge job.
Mate if you can't do it yourself then get a replacement engine.
there are 3 in the engine.
the engine will need to come out for the front or rear one.
It's equal to changing a cam bearing.

This engine had no noise until just now :(

the engine doesnt need to come out use a slide hammer . can be done but yer too much trouble, the only real problem is when the bearing dies, jams it up jams the cam and detonation if your unlucky plus the **** from the bearing going through your engine

Is the rattle there all the time or just on cold start ups? There is only one (1) balance shaft which is in the centre above the cam shaft.

This is what I'd do as well - do a search on this forum as someone else removed the drive gear off the end of the balance shaft - he noticed only a slight vibration so reckoned he was happy with it.

yeah its always there, actually it's more noticeable as the engine warms up.

Is there a write up somewhere on how to remove the cog? or at least the timing cover?

I would recommend you get a "Gregory's service & repair manual". It will give you all the info you need. Should be able to get one from an auto-parts. About $70 I think, been a while since I bought one. Worth every cent.
