I am about to paint my bare metal alloy rims with a primer/build.

What is best to clean rim before paint? Wax and Grease remover or Thinners?

Thankyou in advance

you can use wax and grease. i usually use a fast evaporating multi purpose thinners on bare metal. you going to lay down an etch primer first before the high build stuff?

I was just going to use a primer/build taking in mind its pressure pack and pressure pack Dupli-Colour mag wheel paint.
I can get and dust some etch on if you recon it will make a difference.

I truly appreciate you answering these basic questions. I know what I know and I know what I don't know.

Thankyou

Yep, definitely use etch primer. It gives the paint and primer something to adhere to so it won't chip and flake as easily

even some etch in a rattle can from super cheap. spray a coat or 2 over the wheels and either let it dry and re-scuff with some scotch brite, or spray your high build right over the etch as soon as it flashes off (soon as the thinners burns off it, couple of minutes depending on hot or cold weather). adhesion is the name of the game...

Thanks guys.

I actually have primer/surfacer. I can go buy etch and prime/build if it is better.

Should I still use etch? My reasoning to ask is to keep the total paint thickness thin.

Why scotch brite as opposed to W & D ?? What colour scotch bright please.

BTW, Super Cheap is my friend! lol

etch primer "bites in" as it dries so its a better bond between paint and the metal. so yeah use etch.

scotbrite is to scratch up the primer so paint has something to grab hold of. if its a wet-and-dried smooth surface, the paint may just sit on top of the primer and peel off in a few days/months.

especially wheels which go through pretty extreme hot/cold cycles.

Seriously, is anything needed between the etch and the colour coats besides drying and scuffing?

Any colour/grade of scotch brite you would recommend?

Last time I did paint research was 30+ yrs ago so I am way way out of date.

Thankyou ari666
