Hi all,
After some advice on the best oil and oil filter combo to run in my old girl (VX SS Series II 6PSD with 225k on the dial)
I have been using Penrite HPR50 which is 40w-70 "high performance" mineral.
At the moment I have the good old "oil light flash on at cold start up" for a couple of seconds and can hear the lifters until she warms.
I know there is work to be done there, but I dont have the workshop or coin to address that issue at the moment.
I have had the old girl for almost a couple of years now and have done oil changes every 5k.
I have recently started a new job which requires me to drive her every day for around 40kms per trip and a good run of 110KM/h.
She is pretty tame in terms of mods, just a SS growler intake kit, mafless tune. Still standard apart from this.
My driving habits are relativity tame, the odd redline every second trip or so.
Any suggestions or opinions would be awesome.

thanks in advance

Happy Friday to all

Wow - Why so thick?
Go back to something like a HPR10 which is a 10w50 full synthetic or go the whole hog and run Castrol Edge 10w60. Have run both in both of my LS1's and the Edge was better at keeping the lifter noise to a minimum.

that oil is massively thick and not even close to recommended specs for a LS1, no wonder your lifters are ticking on start up.

Depending on engine condition i'd be either running a 10w40 full synth or with the KM on yours probably a 15w50 nulon full synth.

i wouldn't be going near redline with oil like that, the top end must be starving for oil at times.

Any filter is fine, nothing wrong with the off the shelf rycos, the only reason i buy the K&N filters is for the nut on the bottom to change em cause i'm sick of em jamming cause i do em up to tight :p

Holy moly...that would almost pass as a diff oil its so thick lol. Ryco filters are tried and true. Theyve got a performance filter now which eliminates drain back so that may help with keeping the oil in the lifters over night.

I would go back to anything between a 10w-40 to 20w50

I don't drive an LS but that oil is to thick for that engine, not even close to the factory recommended stuff. That oil is designed and recommended for a high mileage old school flat tappet engines.

I believe the recommended oil is a 10w-30 full synthetic, I'd probably go with the 10w-40 to 50 weight oil and see what it does. HPR10 is probably the right stuff you want.

I too use and recommend ryco filters :)

Holy f##k. Even with 225km's on the clock and a lifetime of abuse that is way too thick.
Know of a couple of people who routed engines using HPR50 years ago thinking that it was just a 50 weight oil
As suggested try something with a little less viscosity than maple syrup. Maybe a 10/40 or 10/50 as been suggested
Poor old oil pump would be busting it's arse to move that stuff when it's cold

I have been using ryco filters for years without an issue
