Hi all,
The Mrs is looking to get herself a car, still on her L's but hopefully buying something long term.
Price range: under $10k
Preferably a hatch with Low K's, Cheap insurance, Good fuel economy, you get the jist.
She has been looking at Astras but i have heard in general that Holden small cars are far from reliable with pricey maintenance...

So time to get a few opinions, I'd love to get some thoughts on this so I can direct her purchase in a wise direction.

YARIS, YARIS, YARIS.
Toyota is arguably the best motor car manufacturer in the world, even if some don't like hearing that bold statement.
Toyota Yaris under 10K will not be hard to find. Be VERY sure an immaculate service history. Auto or manual both a very good drive. Two or four door. 1.3 or 1.5 engine.
NO cam belt to worry about. Very very reliable and good small car.

Couldn't agree more, but the lady is far too concerned with "aesthetic appeal" haha

plenty of buzzboxes under 10k, just get a rollerskate

GM have never been great at making them though, I'd avoid the Opels and the Daewoo's

Thoughts on a Barina? (that was her other first choice)

Latest Barina 1.6 is a good drive. Auto box gets itself a bit mixed up if driven hard, so would much prefer manual. Can't comment on earlier versions.

Nissan Micra, very cute but be VERY aware of that dreadful CVT box. Manual is a must. Have heard expensive to service. Unless you do it yourself of course properly.

Still say Toyota Yaris is by far the best small car available with so many options and colours available. Low cost servicing and parts, including if it's crashed compared to others.
