They are only held on by 2 screws, I have taken them off in the past to flush the side skirts out. I just have little room to get a screwdriver in there.

You can use a philips head 1/4" bit & a 1/4" ratchet spanner. They both work for me.
I have vy ss skirts on my vt. The wheels are 8" with 19"x 35 x 245 tyres. Both of those methods above work for me. Saves taking the wheels off.
