Gday guys, first time poster long time lurker of the forums.

Bit of a problem has happened and need help. with my 2004 L67 VY Series 2 Calais Supercharged

Was driving home like normal after a day at work and it then said it was overheating on the freeway and it got to the point where i coudn't even get over 80km
was making a rattle sound from the back when i would try to accelerate to speed
so i stopped in the emergency lane..
turned off the car sat for like 20 mins waited for it to cool down cuz the fans were goin spinning rapidly trying to cool down then it stopped turned back on got to 100 or so just fine turned off at my exit then
had to slow down to 40 cuz roadworks then i couldn't get back to 60 at all back end was starting to rattle again then car completely shut down and turned off so turned off at some random street
then lost all steering car turned off and i literally couldn't
turn no power steering at all and turned off onto the grass on the highway couldn't brake very well either so just pulled the handbrake up then car wouldn’t start at all.
had a nice bloke come out and aid me got a jump start started fine and got it home as I was just a few mins around the corner.

Prior to is this though car was completely flat dead before I left my house so got my housemate to jump start me and was on my way. later that night after finishing work car started fine took a mate home and had the car idling
out side his for a good 20-30 mins just chattin **** then was on my way then everything happened..

Next day gone to look over a few things like oil and coolant etc oil was fine not milky looking or anything but the coolant level was low to empty so I put some water in and did a bit of a bleeding cycle but upon turning the car on
it sounded very rough and sluggish and struggling to stay on so i panicked and turned it off upon this also my mate said that there was some grey/whitish smoking coming from the exhaust which I'm fearing the most
as that could indicate either cracked cylinder or blown head gasket ,

If anyone can shed some light and information about what could of gone wrong and the damage its gonna cost to get fixed will be greatly appreciated..

    Cheers.

rattling is probably the engine pinging due to being overheated. i say you may have blown headgasket there.
blocked radiator maybe the cause if you have water in it or jammed thermostat. get radiator out and get it flow tested at radiator shop.
then check for blown head gasket.

    Thanks for the reply,

Not the kinda news I wanted to hear but if its either one of those I guess its not too bad but the head gasket being the worst.
where abouts is the thermostat located on the L67 engine? I've looked all over the internet and Youtube cant find a straight answer or location.

    Cheers.

Thermostat on most cars usually hangs off the top radiator host the block sometimes there's two thermostat housing looking things look for the most bulbus one needs to be big enough to house the thermostat
