You get a 1/2" threaded pipe with a 90 degree elbow screwed onto it and with another shorter piece of threaded pipe scewed onto the elbow, then all you do is screw that into the seal until its tight and just tap on the elbow and the seal pops out. I just realize you got the trans upside down so in your situation flathead screwdriver would maybe be the best way.

Yeah I shoved a bit of paper towel down the pipe, just past the seal, so I didn't get any chips or metal/rubber shards down the pipe and then carefully used a flat blade screw driver. I eventually got it out and vaccuumed out the paer towel with the shards. Your way sounds heaps more efficient! I was even looking at purchasing some opening pliers or lock ring pliers like below. I like your idea much better!
