Blue motor had better harmonics mainly due to better crank so it seems more refined with hei & varijet...just remember if swapping blue where red motor was probably need to trim & bash sump a little for counterweight clearance etc.

12 port head has better mid range but going all out heavily ported red will generally have better peak power....although if serious you'd go straight for j zed head or yella terra alloy if can find one.

Must admit was surprised by vk efi 6cyl how easily they do burnouts & midrange torue so they'd make nice d.i.y project with delco conversion & minor engine mods.

Red/blue and black sumps all interchange...No modifications needed.... :)

Just got make sure the oil pan section of the sump is in the correct position...There are about 3 different pans

I remember when 179HP was the go. I've had good 202s that did 300k or more and I've had others that dropped a rod at 150k. I've seen cam gears sheered too on 202s. When I was 17, 192 was the pick, cam and Yella Terra head and roller rockers and extractors. They went pretty hard. If going a Holley it will need to be new. SH ones tend to leak and run poorly. They do add some suction noise if you're into that.

Does that happen on the Blue too?
block splitting?... yes they crack behind the starter and along the welch plugs
but
the vibes? no, much reduced on blue/black motors. Different style of crank you see

and the rest.... ! Torrie has a number - LCL/LJ is different to LH/LX
Holden? EH is different to HR is different to HT and then you have Bedfords and Chevs.. different again
and of course Commodore (only the one style )

I knew at least 3, but wasn't sure of the exact number...I have an HK/HG style one here, a Torana one (not sure of model as it came from an HB that had been converted to run a red then he changed to a blue and now is running a barra) and a Commodore... :)

I've seen 202's blow number 5 and 6 pistons......All blue/black and reds.....I've heard varying reasons why they do it, but never got into it....The cam cog in all holden 6's were fibre and were crap...I personally have always replaced them with alloy ones....Saves them stripping out at the most inconvenient time...

Me personally have 2X202's here.....First one has a yella terra head and really small cam.....Still ran strong when I removed it.

The 2nd one...Unsure of specs but has a 186 style head (larger plugs compared to the 202's), balanced (noticed when I changed sumps)...Ran out of pull around the 5,800 RPM but revved to 7,000....ex-speedway motor...Going strong when I removed it to put the current blue in...

The main problem I have personally struck with 2nd hand holleys is leaking from float bowl, metering block and accelerator pump gaskets....They can also suck air from the mixture screws....The bonus with these is, I reckon they are easier to re-build than the standard strommies....

Yeah mine sucked air from the pivot points. It was SH and useless. The Stromberg went back on and I never had an issue again.

Yeah , na. Hahaha. Triples are only for nostalgia and always driven hard cars. Balancing , syncing , the fuel bill and in a van no thanks.

I was more so thinking a 34 adm or 32/36. I would even put a 38/38 on a van due to the fuel bill and trying to get a nice low down torque fuel curve.
Agreed. Tuning the triples would be a PITA but the look and sound would be so sweet! My first car was a Datsun 1600 with an L18 engine, extractors and a single 45DCOE. Was a hoot to drive and the induction noise of the Weber sounded good but balancing the carby was a bit of a chore.

The 32\36 is the better choice tho for driveability and economy. Used to have a GH Sigma with the 2.6L Astron and the fuel economy was really good with the 32\36 DGV on it.

Never did get it tuned quite right tho even after taking it to a specialist to tune it. Always had a flat spot on initial acceleration that wasn’t there with the original carby (I think they had a Mikuni carby from the factory IIRC). The fuel economy of the Weber was miles ahead of the Mikuni though which made it worth it.

Rebuilt a couple of Weber’s and they were a piece of piss compared to the Japanese carbys (can’t speak for Holley or Strombergs as I’ve never rebuilt those). No fiddly springs and check balls that fly everywhere and are impossible to get back in, just simple gaskets, diaphragms etc.

Didn't some of the early Torana's have triple SUs?
