Hey guys I've decided I want to get a new BMX bike as the last one I had, I snapped the pedal off it and haven't ridden it since. Anyway! I want a good bike, but not something that's over $500 at least. A friend has recommended a few brands and says Specialized, Mongoose and GT are good brands. Opinions? I'm having a suss at these two at the moment: 2012 Specialized P.18 AM | Dirt / Park / Street | JT Cycles Mongoose | Program 18" Kids BMX Bike with Hi-Ten Frame Pro's and Con's? Any help would be awesome because I have no idea as too what I'm looking at. Thanks again.
Can't comment on those two bikes but WTP and DK are some good brands as well. Here's some more options Bikes and Bicycles Range. Price Beat Guarantee | 99 Bikes.
It's been years since I was into bikes but I'm pretty sure most run on 20's as that's the average size bike for most people. There's 2 things to look for in a bike, strength and weight so lighter and stronger is generally the best or you could just buy a frame and add on stuff you like.
Hmm okay cool. What makes it strong? So when I read the specs I know what too look for. Also what's considered 'light'? Edit: Okay so it looks like I have to look for Cr-Mo tubing since it's both strong and light. Liking this one at the moment. http://www.gtbicycles.com/aus/calafia-17484#
You might wonna up the budget... You'll want 20"... Maybe check out a few bike stores and ask around. Check out this site for ideas. Strictly BMX
This^^ My mistake, like I said it's been a while since I had a bmx bike. Last one was a GT Performer then I moved to jump bikes.
how tall are you and what do you weigh. all other opinions mean nothing without those two nit bits of info.
As what Ari said - Alot of people have been going big frame 22" these days as the materials involved as so light. Most of them are 100% Cromoly(Sp?) and weigh around 12-14kg. I had an Eastern bike, but We the people, eastern, high-end specialized etc are pretty good. I steer away from Mongoose as they used to be the best but a lot of the ones i've looked at are fairly heavy now. You'd be suprised how many different frame sizes there are even for just a 20" (which is standard) EDIT: You could get second hand under $500 otherwise you better open up the budget.
im a 6'2" guy, bout 80kgs, ride a 29'er usually. stepped onto my mates 20" bmx and immediatly realised it was a mistake. knees hit the handlebars especially when youre trying to turn/kick out, went to manual the bike basically FIRED out from underneath me and careened about 5 meters away. im sure id get used to it, but 20" for a 6+ foot tall guy is a joke.
top tube or perceived top tube length is what you need to look at. also comes down to geometry depending on what you want to do with it will depend on the frame. if you plan on eventually doing tricks youll want it heavier, too light and itll have no feel. most of these are 4130 cromo if you plan on racing either a light cromo or alu is the go. but even then too light can make it feel lifeless. obviously ari hasn't watched many BMX guys, plenty of 6ft+ guys on Pro XXL size frames riding about another option you can look at it a 24inch BMX, otherwise known as a cruiser. my suggestion though is this. go take a few for a ride, and for $500 or less id be looking at 2nd hand (nothing wrong with 2nd hand, normally itll have good parts) before I picked my Felt for racing I rode a DK and an Intense. they felt quite strange. also riden other brands such as supercross and its strange how different brands can feel when they are very similar. Radio, Fitbikeco, Wethepeople, are just a few names you could look at. but a lot of those brands would be the lower end of the line for $500. still think 2nd hand is the way to go.
Ah sorry guys, been busy. I'm 6ft and weigh I reckon 70kg. So I'm guessing 20" should be alright? Well if it's going to cost more, then so be it. I want a brand new one and I've looked at WeThePeople and they seem alright also I've heard a lot about Specialized, so they must be decent. That GT Calafia I posted the link to, is that a 20"? Because I really like it. I'll mostly just be doing some riding around the streets doing a few jumps off curbs like I used too (lol). Don't know, I may get into tricks we'll see.
20 inch will be fine. just look at BMX racing and the size of many of them again it comes down to sizing. although it says 20" its just the wheel diameter, not the frame length. your best bet will be, if your going to buy new, to have a ride around on some. most shops will let you have a pedal about, just go in when its quiet that specialized you linked, its an 18inch wheelsize, its for kids that aren't quite big enough for a full 20inch. same with the mongoose, its also a 18inch GTs are a good bike. that calafia looks fine.
Someone who knows what they are talking a bout. I'm guessing you are wanting it for Racing by the sounds of it. As said above 20" is only the wheel size its the size of the frame that changes. If you are sort of on the bigger side of things you may want to look into a cruiser. My brother has a Supercross frame from the states that is made out of scandium, meant to be lighter and stronger than Titanium. GT are a good bike and have maintained their reputation for good racing frames over the years. I haven't raced in a few years now so I'm not sure of other new big named frames out there.
A mate of mine (Sam Naismith, Sydney Swans) is 6ft 7" and weighs around 100kg rode on a 20" Norco bike when we were in high school. Didn't seem too small and awkward for him so I'm sure a 20" will be fine for you.
trying to get stuff from supercross is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. unless its already in stock (and not too many places can get them) its quite a long process and they are damn expensive. and they are either 4130 cromo, 6061 alu or carbon frames, although it may have some stuff mixed in. and because its pretty much a racing frame, it probably doesn't suit what the OP wants to use it for if your just getting back into it, I wouldn't go for something too fancy unless you really really want it. it might look awesome on the screen, but until you've felt what it is like to ride it might turn you off wanting to take it for a pedal. also an idea. a dirt jump MTB. generally a hardtail and a short travel fork, something like a giant STP or Norco ryde
So much to take in haha. I'm not going to be racing or doing anything to nuts! I just want a good strong bike that will last me for years. So is that Calafia a 20" rim? I know you said the frame has a part in it, but since you said it'll be fine I might try to find a place that sells it. Are Standish stores any good? Anything other bikes shops there might be in Adelaide?
having a look at their website I don't see why not. seems they can get a few brands in, so there could be some good variety when you go in. Bike Shops & Stores | Bike Shops Adelaide, Norwood, and ADELAIDE | Bike Shops Adelaide | Bike Shops South Australia - BikeExchange that contains a bit of a list of different stores. Buy BMX Bikes for Sale - BikeExchange.com.au hope the link works. just a list of all the bmx bikes in SA that are listed. gives a good idea of which stores to go to. good luck and have fun would love to point you in the direction of a S&M bike, youde never be off it, but they are as hard to get as a supercross.
