So as per one of my other threads I still have a problem with my door lock fuse No.7 blowing intermittently I have come to the conclusion that it is the Body Control Module as when it is blowing the fuse it makes a noise and just doesn't sound right. I have read that you can diagnose the BCM the same way u can diagnose the ECU via ALDL, is it a green plug near the fuses and brake switch? I might try that before replacing it if the LAUNCH scan tool I can get my hands on will do it. Anyway if I do need to replace the BCM what is required in terms of key fobs and what not. What do I need to look for when talking to various wreckers in finding a replacement. Can my current two button key fob be reprogrammed to the replacement BCM?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Yes, green plug (that looks identical to the ALDL for the ECM except for the colour) but I'm not aware of being able to use the paper clip to get fault codes from it. I'm pretty sure it's Tech 1 (with a dedicated BCM module) only. There may be an aftermarket tool that also will do it but it doesn't use the OBD1 protocol that is used for the engine management.

It's been a while but I think that you can reprogram the remotes to suit any BCM, up to a maximum number of differently coded remotes (like 4?). If you try to add more than that I think it's OK, it just pushes the first programmed off the number of those that will disable the anti-theft. Reprogramming also requires Tech 1 and the BCM module. There should be many locksmiths capable of doing that so you're not stuck with the Holden dealers.

The easiest way of course is to find a BCM and matching remote(s). If the case(s) is(are) a bit rough that can be easily swapped.

There was a change made between Series 1 and II VP regarding the indicators flashing. I can't quite recall exactly what that was though. I think it was that the indicators do/do not flash when the system armed. It was of little consequence unless you're pedantic about keeping the car original; both BCM's work in either model.

Cheers for the info, I wasn't going to attempt paper clipping the BCM as I know you need Tech 1 or equivalent so i'm hoping that the LAUNCH scanner can do it.

yours should be mongoose brand. you can email them the code off the inside of the bcm unit and they program you a new remote for $100 plus postage... easy peezy.....

i dealt with the brisbane office... Mongoose Australia - Automotive Technologies - Home

(side note: vn's 10/89 and younger are cobra remotes, good luck finding someone to program those)

yeah. also when you take out your old one just make sure the replacement has the same part number. then all you need is the code off the inside of it.

Isnt the two button remote thats pictured the bosch ones? And only way to have them programmed is through Holden?
My old VP Berlina had a one button remote and that was a mongoose one where I could get sent a new coded remote.

they will be able to tell just by the code from the inside of the unit who makes it. i dont think holden even program those anymore. if you called them they would probably direct you to someone else or say sorry cant help you...

Gonna pick up a BCM for $100 with a key fob and throw it in, fingers crossed this is the problem. There are relays inside the BCM and it's possible that they are the problem which explains the noise when the short is happening. I really hope that it's the BCM coz i'm sick of these bullshit electrical problems.

Oops. This is only true of low series BCM's. (The flash/no flash is also correct for them but the high series BCM's have always flashed the indicators on arm disarm.) The revised Series II VP Calais and VQ II BCM's don't interchange with the earlier Series I BCM's.

The change was made in Calais (and VQ) built from 16/02/1992, VIN higher than L577653. The part # for the newer BCM for Calais and VQ II is 92044847.

If you replace a BCM (or vehicle battery) there is a relearn procedure for the lamp warning system:

(remove the fuel pump fuse to force a BCM reset)

Engine 'on', idling.

Park lamps 'on'. Wait 5 seconds.

Apply foot brake and hold for 5 seconds.

Switch park lamps off, wait 5 seconds, foot still on the brake pedal before switching off the engine.

The delay period for auto headlights off is also settable, up to 120 seconds after the switch is turned to 'off':

Ignition on, park lamps on, driver's door closed. Press and hold the dome lamp switch on. Turn the ignition switch off and open the driver's door. Wait the desired delay time before releasing the dome lamp switch.
