pop the handle of the kick panel, grab some pliers and pull the cable part not the handle,

has happened to me before, thought i snapped the cable but it was just the handle had let loose on the cable

this will let go normally first before the cable snaps

You can also get to the cable with a tent peg through the front grill.

so was the cable snapped or do you need to adjust the latch/striker?

Either that or get someone at the front of the bonnet to push down while you pull the lever... Just another tip in case it happens again as it has happened several times with me before.
