Hi how important is it to have the metal arm reach from one pad over to the next in the centre off the pad?

((I'm talking the metal arm that can see through the little window area on the caliper)) it reaches to the opposite pad

It's contacting the rotor when driving because it must be a little bent.. Instead of fiddling around getting it bent to the right spot could I just have it not locked onto the opposite pad..

it works like a spring to keep tension on the pads when the caliper fitted and there also shims the pad sits on are they there

@stick3

So it's pretty much just to assist in installing the caliper

I just put my hand through the wheel and lifted it up completely and the sound while driving has gone now. I really only see it as just holdihg the pads in place while the caliper is closed.

Thanks for your help
