BREAKING: VODAFONE TO LEAVE TRIPLE EIGHT

IN major V8 Supercar news, Triple Eight Race Engineering will lose the backing of Vodafone at the end of the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship.

The team announced late this afternoon that Vodafone Hutchison Australia's sponsorship of the Queensland-based operation will come to an end after this year's Sydney Telstra 500 in December.

"Everyone at Triple Eight Race Engineering would like to acknowledge and thank VHA and all their staff, past and present, for their unwavering support over the last six years," Triple Eight said in a statement issued this afternoon.

"Together Triple Eight and Vodafone have set new benchmarks for motor sports in Australia, both on and off the track, since our first race together in Adelaide 2007.

"To date we have enjoyed 68 race wins together, three Bathurst 1000 wins, three Teams Championships and three Drivers Championships and fully intend to add to all of those during the balance of 2012.

"At the same time, together, we have created some of the most memorable activations ever seen in the sport in Australia such as the unique Red Dust livery for Darwin, the cammo livery for Townsville and two sensations F1 opportunities at Albert Park and Bathurst for JDub and Lowndsey respectively with Vodafone Mclaren.

"And there’s still more to come before TeamVodafone signs off at Homebush in December!

"Meanwhile we will be on track in 2013 with new title sponsorship and we’ll be bigger, better and faster as we roll out our Car of the Future Holden Commodores!"

Vodafone has backed the team since 2007 but will finish with the team when its current sponsorship contract ends at the end of this season and will not renew.

“As a long-term TeamVodafone partner to Triple Eight Race Engineering, Vodafone has been a great supporter of the sport on and off the track," said V8 Supercars CEO David Malone.

“We respect their decision and wish them well. No doubt the Triple Eight team are already fielding queries from potential new sponsors.”

Drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes both re-signed with Triple Eight Race Engineering earlier this season; Lowndes for three seasons until the end of 2015 and Whincup re-negotiated his 2012 deal and extended his overall contract until the end of 2014.

Yeah - well, when you loose $400mill something has to give. Will be interesting who replaces them. Monster energy drink has been rumoured for 888.

VS
VERY sad news with Vodafone leaving. :(
Monster would get my vote for sure. Thomo's car looked S@#T hot last year in the Fujitsu series.
