A news show many many years ago did a story on this and it was a massively inflated figure in the hundreds of thousands for just a cheap economy car.

I suppose the exception is Caterham, actually costs more if you would like the car built for you.

Just the Alloys/tyres alone would be $4000. The new Fiesta I recently got only had a temporary mobility kit - i.e. an air compressor and a can of tyre goo. Since a lot of my driving was going to be rural, I needed a tyre; Ford sold a spacesaver kit (w/jack, wheel brace.wheel) for....$370!

For a VX Commodore, the plastic shell on back of seat where pocket is was $400 new.
