Buying a new car one part at a time

Purely hypothetical question and possibility asked already but i wonder how much a brand new car would cost to build from scratch paying dealership prices vs. buying the same car off the lot?

Dealerships don't sell vehicles to break even. They want a profit. And a large one at that.

So of course there is a markup.

Paying dealership fees will bend you over. I priced up a new fog light lens for a VE. $220 each for one from Holden, or $40 for a genuine off eBay. Speaks for itself.

Back in the 90s a $25k car was worth about $140k minimum in new, genuine parts. Eg. the bodyshell w/doors for a VX Commodore was in 2005 about $22k.

Apparently yes; my VB-VC parts catalogue has a part no. for a shell. That example was from a guy I worked with in the RTA where they did vehicle regulations, in particular dealing with auto theft, rebirthing cars etc.

well the option to rebirth has been stopped completely. i doubt holden would sell a body that has tags, so it wouldnt be possible to buy a whole car new.

used to be able to buy new body shells from Holden back even in the VN-VR days. The dealer I worked at had a few of them stacked up on shelves in the spare parts warehouse.

Could you buy for instance a VF v6 Commodore for under $150,000 if you were buying one part at a time?

probably not; cars these days are very complex with lots of parts, many of these are computer in nature and as such very expensive.

i reckon you blow 150,000 just on the drivetrain.

how far are we going? i.e buying roller rockers each? cam, valve springs, chains, pistons, rings etc?

then trans valve bodies, pumps, seals, etc etc.. mate. **** gets expensive real quick.
