well packed out the socket, and it fits better,put on locking tool, and bingo undid the bolt ,bloody tight, and removed balancer also I bit of a job, whould not have got it loose with out the locking tool

I know that the engine will be full of sluge that has to be cleand out is it possible to jack up the engine high enoth to remove the sump to clean out the pick up

well removed tappet covers and front cover don't look to sludged up but a lot of burnt on stuff in covers

Lots of people have removed the sump with the engine in the car so it is possible yes.
Post some photos of what you see as you open it up.

That chain area looks pretty damn clean compared to one I saw on JC. Obviously you service it more than is recommended? By GMH that is.....;);)
