    Hey guys,

I have a LS2 that has been cammed, had heads, springs and double row timing chains down.

My question, what is the best engine oil to use?

I know HSV recomment Mobil 1, but is there anything better? And what weight should I use?

    Cheers.

    How many K's?

The guys on the LS1 forums swear by Castrol Edge 10-60. Its ####ing expensive (anywhere from 70-90 dollars a bottle and you need 2 bottles) and I found my engine didnt quite like it, was a tad noisy.

Another high recommendation from the LS1 forums is Penrite HPR 10 (10-50 I believe)(and HPR15 which is 15-60 for summer/higher k's) both of which are easy on the wallet. Ill be trying HPR10 in about 1000km's time.

Generally you're looking for around a 10w. Holden recommends 5-30 Mobil, but remember thats for a brand new car, I wouldn't use 5 weight.

^^ i run royal purple 10w-40 in my unopened ls2 and my tuner says when the cam is in to continue running royal purple 10w-40 or lighter 5w-30. Top stuff :)

Holden recommend 10-30 for efficiency reasons. 10-60 will offer more protection although I've always used 10-40 in mine.

iv used 10-60 edge was good, been using magnatec 10-40 and that's been fine, Royal Purple seems to be popular in the states.
put 5-50 mobil 1 full synthetic in my ss and the engine is noisier hot and cold.

120,000km. About 3000km with the mods and I drive it around 200km a week.

Yeah, with the cam and gears... efficiency in not a concept my car understands.... :p

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Looking like the Edge 10w60 is the winner. So far mostly all positive comments about it.

I'll have to inform my mechanic... :)

Just hope they have 10-60 in drums. Because you need 1 and a tiny bit bottles of it and you cant buy 1 litre bottles so you need to fork out for 10 litres.

...I liked what Chevs used in mine when they serviced it and did the tune. Oleon, not sure on the weight, but was nice and quiet.

+1 for edge 10-60. i went with it based on the research i did, as grennan said the ls1 forum guys love it.

its a bit noisy but it was the same with the oil in it when i bought it, dunno what breed that was.

grennan, i recall on the aussie ls1 forum some guy was looking into a bulk buy of edge 10-60. dunno if it was 20L or a 44 gallon drum but he reckoned he knew the local castrol rep but even so it wasnt much cheaper in bulk at all, dammit

It was a 209 litre drum and it was just over 3 grand. It wasnt cheaper to buy it in bulk. However, thats direct to public prices if I recall correctly, if you got an existing customer to buy it, Im sure youd get it much cheaper.

Im gonna try HPR10 next oil change. If not...back to the Castrol.

Apparently there's not much margain in engine oils, we used castrol edge 10-60 in the 200 liter drums at a dealership i worked at for some of the european cars before they switched to the manufacturing selenia oil as it become more readily available i guess, the selenia oil was awesome, i used there selenia 5-40 i think it was, it was a racing blend for the performance type engines and engine, felt like it went better like less friction.

You'll start to stock up when Supercheap does sales. At my work we sell bottles of that **** for 90 bucks retail and I dont think Repco is much better whereas I think Supercheap sell it for just under 80. You can get then for like 60 bucks when they do sales. But you gotta get in real quick because they either a) sell out real quick or b) take it all off the shelf.
