Just bought a VE Berlina, the log book has been stamped by holden about 6 times but has little info on what was done. If you have access to Holdens database and could check for me that would be awesome. Let me know and I will PM you my VIN. Thanks if you can ...:beer chug:
oh, I thought all dealer servicing was kept on a database so that when you take your car to a different dealer they can see whats been done? I could call them like you said, but wasn't sure how much info they would give me ???
The information contained on the R.O's pertaining to your car will be specific to the dealership where the servicing was done. What sort of info are you chasing? Extra work done, or any warranty issues that the car may have had?
Sabbath, yes both those things. I basically want to know its history so I know where to start and what to expect with future services, like is the water pump original or has it been replaced, coolant, plugs, etc etc.. The only fault i can fiind mechanically is a knock in the front suspension over bumps which i here is common. You work at holden?
After I bought mine I contacted the dealership looking for some history, but they couldn't tell me anything for privacy reasons. I hope you have better luck with them!
privacy? unless you asked for personal information of the previous owner, its not nothing to do with privacy.... but its got everything to do with LAZY. go to another dealer. notify them of 'CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP', and then the service history of the car belongs to you- not the previous owner. as registered owner of the vehicle, you are entitled to know its service history. you arent asking for anything private regarding the previous owner at all- especially since the database should now show you as the current owner. if one dealer doesnt know the privacy laws well enough, go to another- their loss in future servicing business. I bought a 2nd hand subaru forester and the log book had been stamped by subaru. AS ITS LEGAL OWNER I was able to obtain specific service history information regarding everything. brake pads, clutch.... everything with a km and date log. It's exactly the same with anything else you buy. For instance you buy a house, you can go to council and ask to see the entire file history for your own property.... this includes DA's applied/approved, previous corresspondance regarding the dwelling, anything. Once the previous owner sells their right of ownership, they sell any rights to that item as well. Car, house, shetland pony... anything . Personal information like contact details, DOB etc, is obviously still private- but thats as far as it extends.
To invoke the provisions of the Privacy Act in relation to the service history of a motor vehicle is an absolute abuse of authority and a complete cop-out. Don't be bullied by them, stand your ground and politely make your request again stating the obvious - change of ownership.
