Can anyone recommend a basic system for a VZ?

I have no idea about upgrading car sound systems. I'm aware there is a FAQ i'm just curious what is the absolute lowest level upgrade I would be looking at.

The stock system isn't bad, but I can't help but feel a new set of speakers would do a world of difference. I'm not really interested in spending Sub and Amp money.

You could just replace all the speakers with a decent brand or spend the most you can afford. That should up grade the sound quality on the cheap if you don't mind going used it would be cheaper ebay gumtree etc.

Leave the speakers (they won't help all that much) and spend some money on a new headunit. You will also need to factor in an antenna adaptor (usually about $10) and a fascia kit (about $25-40 depending on brand and single din or double din)

Some great brands and specials going on at the moment for headunits also. Have a think about what options you would want and start looking from there. Or "usual" options are...
MP3
USB
iPhone/iPod
Bluetooth Handsfree and Music
DVD
GPS

Be wary when looking, when a H/U offers USB, it pays to confirm that it handles iPhone/iPod CONTROL not just iPhone/iPod playback through Aux-In. Any questions, pop them here and someone will answer that for you.

My opinion is that that would be the best option for a first single upgrade.

Your headunit only puts out about 11wrms - 22wrms off memory, they would successfully power the lowest of quality speakers e.g stock lol. If you change your speakers it will make a slight difference, but for the Money you spend you will be pretty bummed out, if you wanted to get technical you could run a processor / amplified hi-low converter, but for the price you can pick a fully featured headunit up for it will be better to get a new deck.
Also, put 6x9s up in the back parcel tray, and disconnecting the rear door speakers. if you cut them out, you can buy rear speakers grills made for vt-vz, you will get a lot better sound compared to the shitty 6" speakers in the rear door which are pretty much pointless because of how low down at the trim they are.

The reason i want to avoid this option is because it takes away your wheel controls and driver screen display. Also I find it makes the cars interior 'look' aftermarket.

So basically I would need to amplify the stock headunit at absolute least if I wanted to go this direction?

Its strange how they have the places for the rear parcel deck speakers but nothing back there. I was assuming I would be placing the upgraded sounds system back there

actually mate, whats stranger is that the holes are perfect 6x9s...yet the holes are used for premium sound 8" subs ;)

as for swapping the headunit, you don't have to lose the steering wheel controls. But it is an extra expense. As for the look, well yeah, I think it detracts unless using a double din which increases cost again.

Other options are using Phreddys Mod for an Aux Input.

Dropping 6x9s into the rear will give you a little kick in the rear for sure but you will definetly need to disconnect the rear speakers so as to not the overdrive the h/u. Amplifying them is also an option.

What did you have in mind?

Not nessacarily, from an outright SQ point of view then yes, as we concentrate on our front stage only. But for "street beats" the average person can benefit from them, the extra bass response without going for a sub and overall increase in volume compared to standard 6'' speakers.

OP many aftermarket speakers are a lower sensitivity than the stock ones, so once installed are often quieter, and as such often don't offer much improvement. Basic front stage upgrade, or front and rear, requires external amplifiction.

Put it this way, spend $300 installing new speakers, sit back and listen you'll most likely be dissapointed, and feel that your $300 didn't bring you much value, even more so if you retain the factory head unit. Add an external amp, let's say another $200, and your much closer to getting $500 worth of value.
