Hi my brother in law just bought a VK commodore and he wants to put an 8 into it. I have located a Blue 253 and we are trying to find out if it is legal to be put into a Vk. Ive had one before with one in but never knew if it was legal. I will be posting some pics of my VH SLE soon. Regards Steven.

Not sure if that is right. Blue motors had emission control like the black 308's in VK Calais'.

The problem might be getting insurance or it registered because it's a major conversion like putting a V6 in. It might need an engineers report to register and get insurance. 253's didn't come as black motors, only red & blue. As the 253's were in the VH's etc, they had emission control in them.

I don't see any major problem as long as the motor you are putting in complies with emission control setups from that era. I would possibly ask a specialist this question who reports on conversions etc.

Yea i agree with Slim, its proberly better to get a specialist to look at it incase you cant do it and might get fined by vic road or the coppers.

There arn't any problems with the physical fitment of the motor, as the 253 and 308 are externally identical, so no certification is needed there. The issue is that since the 253 was never offered in the VK there is no compliant emissions gear for it offered in that model, Effectivly you are fitting an earlier model motor to the vehcle , hence the onus is on you to prove the vehcle still meets the emissions requirements. You could probably get an engineer to sign off on it, but is it really worth the expense of certification to effectivly down grade a car that realistically is worth bugger all to start with. If you're buying the car check that the engine number lines up with the one on the rego papers, if they line up then the RTA/Vic roads or who evers computer system has accepted it then it shouldn't be a problem. As for the cops defecting you, So long as its painted black and the numbers line up with the papers, I doubt any of them would pick the difference.

The rule in Victoria is this and it should be similar in other states, it's not an older engine that is the problem, it's an engine that passed an earlier adr emissions law, for example, the first unleaded adr 37 goes from feb1986tojan1997 (vl to vs) I think there are revisions in there but yeah you can stick an rb30 in a vn legally as they have the same emissions test and there is no structural modifications or welding of mounts needed to fit one.

You need to find out if the vh and vk ran the same emissions law if they did then it's no problem

would that work with a vn into a vk? (202)
would they have the same mounts?
also would i be able to pass my car with a 186 Blue motor? i live in canberra and the motor is out of a vh.
