hi is there a valve in thye pumps that cause over pressurising resulting in power steering becoming excessively touchy/easy/dagerous? suspensions fine i have reaad a few posts on forums saying that it can cause oild burning/colour change (whiuch i have) cheers
Yep. check all of your hoses too, my old VS steering got really dodgey at high revs (real twitchy) and it was just a small split in the return line causing the fluid to get airated
cheers, hoses seem ok, i have been told its the pump but a hell of allot of steering places have said its some pin in teh rack however i have a fairly new rack/reconditioned on. and olis is burnt sooo yeh mite rip this valve off and see if its dirty/blocked as it feels like im driving on ice at 100 (more the spee the worse it is but its still pretty light at idle) cheers
if the oil is discolored/burnt i'd replace the pump, it's a simple rotary vain style so there shouldn't be anything to cause burning, sounds like the main bush/bearing is on it's way out. I had a vl that had a similar issue (basically the same saginaw pump) turned the oil black and would chatter/glitch when turning the wheel quickly at low revs/speeds, replaced the pump as it had a lot of play in the shaft, new pump and flushing the system solved the problem. I expected the seals in the rack to crap themselves with all the impurities that were in the system from the knackered pump but they remained fine, must've caught it in time. also the spring in the pressure relief valve in theory would get weaker over time thus lowering the pressure output of the pump, have seen some different write ups of people adding shims/washers to the springs to increase pressure on other manufacturers pumps/cars, definitely wouldn't be doing this to a commodore.
