I was just wondering if you can use the camera while going forward. I can in my work truck. I was wanting to get the number plate of the car that was buried up my arse on the freeway the other day.
yep chuck it into reverse at 60 and the camera will work .. and watch while the bloke behind buries his nose in your rear
It's set up so that you can't. I am sure someone could override it if they tried hard enough which is probably what has been done in your truck. Watching a rearward facing camera while driving along is a sure way to run up the back of someone else.
I wish for the same function. I know my mate merc B200 has a button on the console that when pressed, shows the reverse camera.
In my MY11 SV6, you could select the rear camera view while driving through a configuration link on the centre console screen. My MY14 does not offer that option. My MY12.5 is out at the moment, so I have not been able to check it.
Have checked the regs and it is actually legal to have it on while driving forward. The authorities apparently see it as more of an aid than a distraction. Still don't think I would want it on all the time. May be handy if towing etc.(or for the tail-gaters!) Now its just a matter of whether it can be done in the settings or some other way. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for you.
you'd have to re wire it , so it's not connected to reverse or buy a wireless one and have it positively wired to come on when you want it to. On a weird note , I've got a swann wireless reverrse camera and i've got a couple of swann wireless security cameras which must work on the same frequency,. coz I can scroll thru and watch myself reverse out the carport sideways
There is a company that has a "video integration kit". I think its usually used to attach a tyre pressure monitor to the vehicle, and have it come up on the built in display whilst driving. What they do is put an interrupter box between the video feed of the reverse camera and add in the second video feed (from another source or in your case the same reverse camera), then also connect to the head unit reverse trigger wire. When you press a button in the cabin, it will simply bring the video up on screen by tricking the head unit. I have no idea if this will work with the VF but it might be possible.
the new holdens with mylink all use sw-can(GMLAN) to switch the mylink to the reverse camera screen, so if you were to send the correct command into the sw-can you could switch it off and on while driving. the VIM modules you can buy to enable video playback while driving do the same sort of thing by sending a message through sw-can to the mylink to enable a diagnostic mode that allows the video to be displayed while driving. they charge a fair bit too for what is essentially a arduino board with a bit of code programmed into it. if you know someone that can program arduino boards they should be able to make something up that will plug into... pin 1 of the obdII port or pin 28 on the 44 pin plug on the back of the mylink unit. both are used for sw-can(GMLAN). they can download the obd canbus modules from arduinos website to send can messages, to get sw-can to work with arduino you connect canH to the sw-can in the vehicle and connect canL to the vehicle ground(body). i dont think there is any other way to trigger the cam to power on and the mylink to display the feed while going forward, you could try ebay but i dont think there is enough demand for that function to have someone make and sell a device that would do it.
A bit off the track as far as VF's are concerned, but a have a VE with an after market dual camera setup for towing a caravan. The camera on the back of the car comes on when reverse is selected. There is another camera installed on the back of the van, and this one is live all the time if you have the screen powered on. When towing my rear view mirror is full of caravan, so the vans camera being live is effectively my rear view mirror. Yes I do have extended mirrors for towing but if you have someone behind you on straight road you can't see them except in the live van camera.
