I was very bad luck yesterday. I didn't drove my commodore for a week and only taking it for a short drive and accident happen. My car collided with a hyundai Getz and it was the other driver's fault. But the problem is he is from oversea and driving a hire car from Thrifty. We both went to police station and have the incident reported and exchanged our details. So I tried to ring Thrifty Adelaide where the guy got his car from, and the staff just not helpful and tell me to talk to my insurance company, but I only got Third property insurance from NRMA and I doubt that NRMA will offer any help. And because I have no way to contact the guys cos he already leave australia today. I am so frustrated and worries about this. I would appreciate if anyone could offer any help?
if you're not at fault find out what the cost of repairs are & then send a letter of demand to thrifty for the cost of the repairs. they should then forward that to their insurer who should then sort it out. be prepared for a wait.
Spot on.. Insurance companies take at least 2 months to receive a quote, authorise it, check it out themselves and then take care of it.. Plus you have to deal with the inefficient bureacracy's of Thrifty.. Your insurance company should give you advice.. Ring em up and just talk to them. If they don't help you out with any of this, then f*ck em and change companies.. But yeah send your quotes, with attached police report to the insurance company and make it crystal clear you want this issue fasttracked.. Maybe even ask if you can talk directly to their insurance company, though it's doubtful they'll allow it. Anyway, good luck.. Keep us informed..
Ok Technically the owner of the vehicle has liability when a car is involved in an accident which is in your favour, regardless of who is driving the car Thrifty is ultimately responsible for paying for the damaged sustained to your vehicle. Contact your prefered repairer and ask for a quote and ask them to help you arrange 2 other quotes as you want it repaired by them. They will tell oyu where to go to get 2 higher quotes. Next send them a letter of demand & tcopies of the 3 quotes for the accident including details of where & how the accident occured. Ie the driver of the other car failed to stop at a traffic control sign (stop sign) and proceeded to pull out infront of my car... etc Give them 14 days to respond else you will seek legal action, be tough from the start. Make sure you send all correspondance registered post. On the day 15 when/if they dont respond file a small debts claim with your local court house. Also make sure you state in your letter you are holding them responsible for not only costs incurred in repairing your car but car rental in you cant get a courtasy car (not a thrifty one <grin>) also legal costs for retreiving the debt if they fail to pay up in time. cheers Scott
That's awesome advice... I'll add one thing though. If you want your preferred repairer to repair your car. Get two (I thought one, but two won't hurt) quotes from a LARGE panel beater. Hell even get 3 just so you know exactly how much damage you're looking at.. Then you take those higher quotes to your preferred panel beater. Who will write up a quote as comprehensive as theirs, but cheaper. Which probably won't be too hard seeing as those big "insurance jobs only" panel shops charge like wounded bulls..
Ahhh! Memories. Many years ago, I was riding a motorcycle north on the Princes Highway at Tempe. A rented ute came out of a rental yard on the east side of the road. He came out rapidly through a small gap in the three lanes of traffic heading south and side swiped me in the right hand lane heading north. I ended up on the ground, and the ute just merged with the traffic and disappeared. All I saw was the rental car company sign on the car. Picked the bike up and limped off the road. Went into the rental yard, and asked for details of the ute. They laughed and told me that they were not that stupid. Called the police. They said no number plate, no witnesses (busy traffic and no one stopped) and no liability accepted by the rental company, BAD LUCK. My forgiving nature has come to the fore. I have even forgotten the name of the rental company, but I think it started with T.
some insurance places offer up to 3000 on their 3rd party cover? then they go after the other driver...think the racv does this, not much help for now, but a thought for later if you change insurer
thanks guys. I tried to contact them via email but no feedback till now. Planning to write them a letter next week if still not hear anything from them. I insured my car with NRMA, but I think I may have to pay excess ($450) which is about the repairing cost. Again, thank you all very much.
