Here is a fact about global warming, well in particular australia. Our lack of rain has nothing to do with global warming. We have been experiencing irregular rainfall for the best part of 10-15 years because there is an el nino weather system off our eastern coast, actually it's closer to South America in the pacific ocean. It's a rare phenomenon that is actually drawing rainfall away from our coast lines. That system is actually breaking up, and it has been doing so for the last 2 or 3 years. Not surprisingly, we're beginning to experience regular downfalls again. Global warming may or not be an issue, no one can actually establish whether it exists or not. There is pretty solid proof that we aren't if you analyze weather patterns spanning thousands of years, in fact our average temperature rise per year is actually less than the last bronze age, which it looks like we may be heading into. That's not to say we shouldn't try and minimise our impact on the environment. We get plenty of rain, we just don't manage it well. We are one of the few countries in the world that do not rely heavily on grey or recycled water. If our governments were forward thinking, we would not be in the situations we find ourselves in now. That being said, in NSW dam levels have risen by 100% in the last year.
This is a rehash of an idea a few years ago, I can't remember who suggested it or when, but I recall reading about this, and the distribution method. Where is commsirac when you need him? I'm sure he can provide us with the link and whether it is achievable or not.
does anyone actually look at the sky at night?? its not always black (not becasue of the moon) ive seen the sky a bright red on numerous occasions (clear skys) so i think theres a little more to it.
What? That makes so sense whatsoever in accordance with the subject everyone is discussing. This guy wants to spray the atmosphere with sulphur, which in turn will change the sky's colour to purple due to dimming and so forth. What you are talking about, is a natural occurence, and possibly something to do with air pollution. 2 seperate reasons for the sky's colour.
im one of those people who dont give a **** i dont care how good it is for the environment im not walking 25km's to work haha. and besides, ill be dead by the time anything happens IFFFFFFFF it happens.
The Sulphur dioxide idea is not new. It has been suggested that some of the effect of anthropogenic greenhouse gases has been reduced by the emission of SO2 from uncleaned coal fired power stations. It's a pretty radical idea. If Flannery is suggesting it he is likely very concerned and he is in a much more educated position than any of us. The real worry is the feedback loops; methane (a 23X better greenhouse gas than CO2) released from permafrost and drying peat bogs, lower reflectivity from disappearing ice etc. If anyone doubts (still!) that life on this planet can change the climate, recall from the junior years of high school science that the planet would not have oxygen in the atmosphere at all (and would have a very different climate) without the advent of photosynthesising forms of life. What we are doing is reversing that process in part. The level of atmospheric CO2 has been much higher in the past, also with a corresponding very different climate. That climate is also influenced by the presence of land masses (which were in a different position when this was the case) makes it difficult to extrapolate back directly and say exactly what the effects will be this time. Not good for us is a pretty fair conclusion.
 It might help hahaha funny as! I'll agree with some posts above. I should care, and i kind of do, but i'm not compromising my arrival times and leaving times for my employment. I have an important position at my work, i live day to day and focus on the job at hand. That's why we have scientists etc, to take care of these problems. Maybe if we had of done it right from the start, i wouldn't think like this. But focussing on whats 100% right for the enviroment won't recover lost money for being late to work, the enviroment won't explain to my boss why i was late, the enviroment doesn't give me the enjoyment of driving my car everyday, the enviroment doesn't pay my bills, it wouldn't pay for my public transport fares if i DID take PT to work. It sounds selfish yes, but most of us are in such positions now, where worring about the enviroment 90% of the day is just not do-able. By that i mean most / alot of us have bills to pay, familys to provide for, cars to put petrol in, groceries to buy, loans to pay off, futures to save for. Call me right wing, redneck and bogan. I'm the one who has my bills payed, no debt, a pantry full of food, a roof over my head and plenty of cash in the bank for my future I also hate hippes  Seriously, everytime i see a hippy, my blood boils. They anger me. :bang:
Sulphur in jet fuel!!!!!!!! I hate to be negative, but me thinks that Flannery has bought shares in an aircraft engine company. For years, fuel specifications have required reduced sulphur content in AVTUR (jet fuel). Reason is that sulphur in the fuel causes extreme and expensive corrosion issues in jet engine turbines. It can do a pleasant job in MOGAS as well, giving the olefactory nerves a major workout by producing hydrogen sulphide gas, otherwise known as rotten egg gas. We might also need to be careful that we don't overdo it, as the dangers presented by global cooling (= ice age) are even more threatening to mankind than the claimed consequences of global warming. But most importantly with State of Origin coming up, it could still be a good idea if it changed the colour of the sky from that kakky blue colour to a nice strong MAROON. Let's get our priorities right!
