I just got my first car VS acclaim S2 auto. the car is in decent nick but i want to do a few things to it to make it my own but still keep it legal while im on my P's (which im getting next month). Mods im thinking abut that should be reasonably cheap and legal - Decent stero - xenon (or how ever its spelt) headlights, - spoiler or body kit ( im not overly sold on this but would be nice if i could pic one up cheap - an alarm and immobaliser - a new sports/chrome exahust (depends on price) does anybody know how much these should cost and if any of them (the exahust) are not legal for a P plater in vic. also any other small mods that would persnalise a car without making too much of a dint in my wallet. my limit per mod is about $500
well a 2 1/2 cat back exhaust about $300 make your car sound like its got more balls well i am a p-plater and never had any problems with cops CAI (cold air intake) I am a doing a blue dash light conversion and its made my car look really good
Smurftec, I could have used the search function and got heaps of Ideas but then i still would not have known what is conisdered legal or not. also general advice on the mods i have suggested woul not have been given. Benno, how much does the CAI cost. maybe i will get the exhaust done. my main prioities are getting some decent speakers and a cd player in the car as im buying it totally stock.
http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...700-buick-ecotec-v6-performance-upgrades.html its a bit out of date, but worth a bit of a look. first of all, fix anything that needs 2 b done, and give it a good service (inc wheel alignment etc) and clean if it needs it, then - sure, get a new head unit and speakers (best if they fit in the factory spaces), unless ur really into ur music that will probably be more than enough if u get some decent quality ones - why xenon headlights? halogen ones work fine, just a personal thing but they really annoy me and don't have any real benefit - again, a personal thing, but i really don't like spoilers other than the boot-lip ones, and i don't think u should get a body kit unless ur going 2 do it properly, and thats not going 2 be cheap - do u live/work/park in a really suss area? if not u probably dont need an alarm, but its up 2 u, u should b able to deadlock the car by locking it with the key/remote then turning the key in the door further around in the lock direction - a 2 1/2 catback is a good idea, u can go 2 1/4 if u want but its less popular. also check out MACE's page, they have good lower cost mods, see about a CAI from them. other things u can do include some window tints, rims (maybe a bit out of budget), seat covers & mats etc
Yeah, its been covered though, for Vic especially, and by asking others what is "considered legal", you may be misguided so be careful, as what one person may consider legal another might not. but that aside, from my understanding, anything that requires an engineer's certificate in terms of engine modifications etc is illegal in NSW, many people do the internals etc
I was defs thinking of getting seat covers and mats, maybe a new steering wheel depending on cost. with speakers i just want something thats new so that when i play some of my more technical and complex sounds i can hear them clearly istead of distorted ( though i wouldnt call myself an audiaphile). i dont live in a suss area but would still feel safer with a aftermarket alarm (something i have learnt from having a locksmith in the family). the reason for the xenon is mostly for A the better light but more B they look much better. is a catback considered a ilegal mod ( im thinking about this from a insurance point of view not a cops one) Im also not wanting to spend much as it is just a first car and im gonna just be using it for gaining exp and confidence. once i get my greens im probs gonna buy a non-Turbo skyline stock, for something with a bit of grunt and style
well u could do the roof lining if its buggered for about $200 or replace the suspension bushes and shocks with factory spec items, but that wont b real cheap
btw, if u have an airbag in the factory steering wheel, its illegal 2 change it you could replace the lights if they r faded, i went with factory items cause i hate the chrome ones just remember tho, since ur selling it soonish, if u make a heap of changes it may reduce its value and/or be harder 2 sell
Im fairly sure P Platers in vic arent allowed to drive modified cars. Modified being anything that improves engine performance. Having said that if you get pulled over by someone who actually knows what theyre on about that would be very unlucky. Most mods you won't be able to tell from the outside/under hood and will improve your performance significantly - tune, roller rockers, etc. Exhausts, never had a problem with mine. Im on my Ps in Vic as well.
An alarm isn't a bad idea for a couple of reasons: 1. The obvious - added security and piece of mind and 2. It can help lower your insurance premium - just depends on your insurer.
