I've noticed a "click" has developed in my VS lately, the speed of the click increases with engine speed and is audible in the passenger side of the engine bay, and quite obvious if listening from underneath the vehicle. I can also hear it while driving particularly if in confined areas. I thought it was a top-end noise so i did an oil flush and put in some lifter-free with the new oil. It's still the same. I asked my mechanic about it and he reckons it's a noisy tappet. What can i do about this? Also, is a tappet the same as a valve stem or the part of the rocker arm that connects to the valve stem? I don't hear the term tappet very often and i'm not sure to what it refers. Thanks.
Yeah i never liked the term tappet an american word i'm sure. In a pushrod motor the closest thing to a tappet it the rockers. Though in other motor what you'd call a tappet could also be a lifter. It's a stupid term thats too generalised imo rockers/rocker arm or lifters should be used. Clicking noise isnt an injector is it?? also could be a very tiny exhaust leak
or not something silly like the water pump failing (mine made a click especially at idle when dying) if you can hear it from under the car, the belt might 'transfer' the noise so it sounds like its coming from somewhere else... or injectors if it makes the same 'click click click' noise (or quieter) when you turn the key to ON with the motor off and it primes it?
I think probably the lifters would be the closest thing to a "tappet". It's not the injectors, they are making a fainter click. I can hear this noise in isolation to the injectors pulsing. I thought it could be an exhaust leak, but i don't know how to rule that out. Putting soapy water on various parts of the manifold failed for obvious reasons. It sounds like a mechanical "click" from somewhere deep under the rocker cover. Rather than a "pfft" i'd expect from an exhaust leak, but i could be wrong. There was metal shavings in the old oil if that's any clue. What would be the steps in fixing a noisy lifter if oil additives have failed? Are new lifters expensive?
was just thinkin, might wanna check that ur leads r plugged in properly- they sometimes spark on the engine making a clicking sound like you said.
in a pushrod motor you cant call a lifter a tappet. a tappet means the part of the motor that acts directly on the valve in ohc cam motor like fords (e series) rb30 magna lifters in these are tappets as they act directly on the valve stem. This is why its a stupid term
that lifter stuff doesnt always work didnt do anything to my m8s vl. a lifter costs bugger all. youd pay more for a labour id say, if you got someone to do it
