VE SSV Z
My 2013 VE SSV-Z (redline spec + sunroof) purchased new in March has done the same since new and at random times, it's taken the dealer 4 attempts to agree and then they replace that abs unit under warranty cause that's what the factory told them to do, it only took 8 weeks to get the part to the dealer, you guess why it took so long, long storey short it still makes the same noise, to date Holden and their engineering dept still can't explain the cause and impact on performance, longevity and reliability of the abs valves clunking away at random times. This issue wasn't evident in the two cars tested before purchase.

Storey ain't over yet as the dealer have been invited to remedy the issue.

2016 VFII Calais (not Calais V) with satnav option
Re OP's post: Must be summat to do with a self check.
I've had my 2007 VE Calais for about four years and it has done it from day one, I did wonder what it was but it has never bothered me to the extent that I thought there was a problem.
Time to worry is when you don't hear it!

I've had this problem for 2-3 years in my VE 2008 MY. I recently had the diff changed out by a diff specialist who inspected the diff when removed and he said that he did not find what he was looking for in the diff which was broken or chipped teeth on cogs. He said there was little if anything wrong with the diff he changed out.

I've decided to run with the one he installed on the car and within days the clunk came back but was much less severe. However within a 100ks or so it is just as bad as ever. This bloke said that it could be the donut or the uni joint.

I had exactly the same problem with my immediate previous car, an EL Falcon. I was told by a local car fixer that the clunk was the diff and that it would stuff the back of the trans as the diff would wobble around inside the back of the trans and flog it out as the inside of the trans where the tail shaft fits, has a brass sleeve in it.

Dunno where I go from here. paying people to learn how to diagnose faults in cars gets tight up my nose BIG time.
