Hey, So it's time for me to start looking at replacing the clutch in my clubby as it's starting to slip when I get excited with the loud pedal. So I've been chasing around a few different places and brands. At the moment, I'm looking at either a McLeod RXT twin kit or a ACT twin HD clutch. But I have a couple questions. I was chatting with the McLeod supplier in Vic and he said that he doesn't think there is a need for me to replace the flywheel, just get it machined. Now, I'm more that happy with this since it saves me a couple hundred bucks, but I wanted to know peoples opinion on this? When people replace the clutch, do they usually also replace the fly or jsut get it machined? He also said that I shouldn't worry much about the throwout bearing, though I think I would just throw a new OEM one in since they are only $180 odd. Last time I had to replace a clutch is was in my old VX S and then I did the fly as well because the stock one was a duel mass pos. What do people think?
the dual mass in a v6 does get replaced when you do a clutch in it, but as for solid flywheels you can keep the standard and have it machined, wont create any problems keeping it. Did you talk to anyone at Australian Clutch Services? There SA based (i believe) But have a great rep on their products
Social is on the money - Only time you need to replace the flywheel when getting a new clutch is for Dual mass ones.
I heard the same thing about not replacing them. But if it were me id do it for peace of mind, like you said.
I'd replace your throw out bearing while the box is out. I've had one fail in the past after about 5000kms after replacing the clutch.
I would also replace the throwout bearing while the box is out an install one of these as well: Xtreme Commodore Clutch Bleeder - Xtreme Clutch
Yeah, good piece of mind. Now a noob question. Throwout bearing is seperate to the concentric slave cylinder? So we're talking about just replacing the throw bearing OR the whole slave cylinder?
Im pretty sure its all one piece on the Ls1.so if you get a slave cylinder it should also have the bearing attached. Well mine did.
Definately do the slave, would be silly not to. Also, the bleeder mentioned a few posts up is a winner also. if you have to pull the box out, why wouldn't you do this stuff?
Alright, slowly starting to put together a cost list. McLeod RXT twin plate clutch rated at 1000hp : $1100 Flywheel to suit: $395 CSC: $160 @ bursons Installation quote from MC Automotive in Mornington 5 hours @ $88/p so $440 Total: $2095
Every shop I have talked to has quoted 4-5 hours. Some of the manufactures have quoted as much as 6.5 hours.
put some beers on and get a mate that knows how to do it to help you its not that bad of job. i think the hardest part is getting the exhaust and tailshaft off... itll save ya $400 bucks might want to add a new spigot bearing and fly wheel bolts to your list as well. the bolts arent supposed to be reused
