On a VN, the factory ones are square.

Upgrade it to the VR coil pack, replace your plugs if you haven't, check your leads and then see how you go.

If failing that, it might be the DFI module.

Nah not the leads. Sorry didn't read that bit properley.

Does it cut out? I had this problem about 3 months ago, the engine kept cutting out on idle and while driving and sometimes wouldn't start. I thought it was the DFI to ECU loom, so i did a whole transplant of the loom, that didn't help, so i replaced the whole coil pack from a crappy stock VP one to a brand new bosch (VR) coil pack and brand new DFI module. Cleared it right up no probs.

a fautly lead can cause problems also. i have this problem on the VS, all new coils and problem goes away but then slowly i get a high speed mis and can feel engine surging a little under moderate to high throttle settings, changed coil and problem went away but was back a few weeks later, have changed plugs previously and didn't solve problems, have new leads going on this weekend and failing that a new dfi (although i replaced a dead dfi last year)

i also have a newset of MSD coils sitting here but i don't wanna put em on untill i know the problems fixed cause i don't wanna fry em

i dnt think its the dfi coz it has dne it to two complete units and i have replaced with new ones each time and it still keeps hapining so i replaced the single coil and it ran fine for about a week and then packd up again so im going out today to get new leads plugs and coil and see how it goes

Leeds generally brake down under load when there're stuffed - like going up a hill the car starts to missfire, cough and fart. Killing coils - hmmmm are they getting too much voltage? Is the altinator charging OK - no other electrical gremlins running around in the car?

Hey guys, I am having the same sort of problem in my series 1 vn. Yesterday it dropped 2 cylinders, so i checked the spark on the coil pack. It seems the bottom 2 have no spark at all..

Does anyone know if I will have to replace the coils and the DFI module, or just the coils?

Also, does anyone know roughly how much the parts I will need are?

    Cheers,

    Sam

VN ignitions are known to be defective. as Cobez said, replace it with the later system, which means DFI and coilpacks (the later systems have 3 separate coilpacks).

the other thing that could cause it is a faulty ECU. you can get these checked, Petroject (i think they're called) did mine and found a problem. they fixed it and it was all good afterwards.
