Hi all,

General question...what is the lifespan of a Commodore? I currently own a VR (417,000kms) and VT (318,000kms) both V6. Regularly serviced, not used for towing. Great cars and they just keep going.

Cheers
The older they are, the more hope they have, all being equal

All I read about lately is electronic issues with VE's and VF's

Newer Commodores have way too many computers and electronics it seems

I don't know if it's our humidity, or just low quality parts?

This is nothing in comparison to some Euro cars...

Early Euro cars were fine, until they stuck computers into everything

We have over complicated the simplest things

Now there's a engine code that ruins your day for everything

More complexity means more problems unfortunately. It will always be thus even if quality parts are used. I prefer lower complexity hence why I got my SSV.

I decided before I even bought a V8 that it had to be a VE with an L98. The VE has enough electronics to be useful but not so much it’s unreliable and the engine doesn’t have any of that displacement on demand or VVT bullshite.

The bodies will wear out before a well maintained drivetrain with the VN-S cars.

IMO the introduction of CANBUS to cars signalled the downfall.

A modern sedan and SUV has overall about 10-12km worth of wiring in them if you laid it all end on end. Thats a big needle in a haystack when trying to find a problem.

VF’s have 8 different onboard computers or modules.

My old WM caprice was immobilised because of a voltage spike from one of the rear amplifiers, it shut off the entertainment system which is an integral part of the security system of the car.

so essentially a speaker fault stopped me from being able to get home from work.

Things are becoming far too integrated and it’s only going to get worse.
