Check the selector linkage. Some VN/VP automatics have a threaded linkage- if you do put the transmission in park, the linkage in the park position and screw the trunnion along the threads until you can connect the two.

Are you checking the fluid level after a long drive or cold?

And the engine is supposed to be running according to the official GMH (green covered) workshop manual.

my procedure for fluid level is checking after 10 mins idling, selecting through the gears and then back to park
switch off and check the dipstick within 10 seconds.
as according to my max ellery manual.

Max Ellery is useless, trust me I have one. Try having the engine running and in park. Then check the level.

Re your Max Ellery. I assume you have one of those big filing cabinets with the big plastic lids? If yes file it in there as that will be the best place for it......;);)

I have a Max Ellery manual and I find that ,even by early 1990's standards , time had passed it by -it was largely based on Max's earlier manuals.

I was lucky enough to find a set of genuine dealer's manuals, at the Lancefield Swap Meet, from Kittles dealership which was at Kyneton- which I now take as the last word.
