that system will not charge a battery man...it puts out a regulared 13.8 Volts....without a load. that won't charge a battery.

of course it will charge a battery most cars charge their batteries at between 13.8 and 14.2 volts.

a 13.8 volt regulated PSU will quite happily charge a battery.

Its irrelevant anyways cos he's going with the 5.1 speakers off the laptop.

But....

As the PSU dosent have a regulator (like an alternator) you run the risk of overcharging the battery.

no you don't.

its a regulated 13.8 volt powersupply, which is perfect for charging a battery.

if anything, the cars alternator is a lot worse because it isn't regulated, the voltage from an alternator will fluctuate with load, and engine rpm.

a cars alternator is heavily regulated...at over 14 volts. The amount of current that can be supplied for charging purposes is what varies.

Yes, voltage is a little lower at idle..but not less then half a volt.

13.8V with a maximum current draw of 40A is not going to sustain a battery AND a car stereo.

dude, a cars alternator HAS to be regulated...otherwise it would put out at least 16-17Volts at high RPM and on top of that....it would be AC!

you don't seem to understand the difference between regulated, and rectified.

yes, they are regulated to some extent, but as I said before, the voltage changes greatly with engine rpm and load.

going by what you've said on here so far, it seems you'll most likely learn something, if you don't learn something, then clearly you didn't read it properly ;)

I never said the alternators output wasn't regulated, I said it wasn't regulated very well, and most certainly isn't heavily regulated like you claim it to be.
