Ok appealing to those with good mechanical knowledge here. I test drove a car today, and when I got it back to the owners place I opened the bonnet and after I turned it off the coolant in the reservoir started to boil, steam coming out. Any thoughts???

Maybe coolant was just changed

I changed mine this morning, filled it right up and was running the car with both heater on and decent 1800RPM to air out system.
After turning off car, i watched the reservoir gurgle and air popping out and coolant spewing out until it settled.

Not saying your test drive car is similar, but for me did happen.

Did it look new, the coolant?

Could be a bad cap, thats the cheap fix and most hopeful

If a head gasket, then oil most likely be in the system. Any milky residue under the cap?

I couldn't get the cap off, it was in a real dog of a spot with hoses right on it and didn't want to start taking things apart on this blokes car. I checked the dipstick and oil was dark but no sign of coolant/ water.

No sign of coolant mixed with the engine oil on the dipstick.

Could be a number of conditions, I'd be asking the owner for required information regarding the matter.

Im not going to bother with the car as what ever it is it is going to cost me and not buying a car with issues like this, just want to know peoples opinions and ideas so I know in future what the problems could be,

If the motor was not over heating I would think it has a faulty radiator cap.
