In light of recent posts stating that ANYONE can do the job of an automotive electronics installer. Here is the test to prove if you can or not.

You know, I'm tired of people always saying that anyone can do this job. You can't just pick up a pair of wirecutters and bingo you can install a stereo....theres so much more then stereos as well. If you look at my signature, I state that I'm a MECP Master Class installer. It took me YEARS to get to my level and I'm damn proud of where I am. It only annoys me when people say that anyone can do this job. So, I rummaged around my boxes and I found my MECP BASIC installer qualification. Heres the questions and the multiple choice answers. How would you go?

Some interesting questions there Rattler, I'll have a go when I get a few minutes tomorow, but at a quick glance most look pretty staight forward but I'd say theres a few tricky ones there and I'd say by the chilling silence youve lost most of the regular posters in the dust ........ lol

All be it so that to be a qualified installer at the basic level u need to know that stuff. it is also true u dont need to knwo that stuff to have a half decent install in your ride. ive done high school physics and can answer most of those questions. However i have installed at least 4 complete stereos for me and my friends it may not be professional standard but it still sounds good and i didnt use any of my physics knowledge. Most of the people on here are asking how to install a stereo because they dont want to pay top dollars to audio shops. Thus meaning they are not after a top quality instalation. SO i believe that any can install a stereo in there ride and get ti to sound half decent. But matching frequencies and working out resistance is another matter and that is why professionals get payed top dollars for install.

ok well ive put in all my stereos and never had any problems. i also fix my car when things go wrong and dont know jack **** about flow, octane levels or bloody anything. i can make an unreal homebrew and get every plastered on great tasting beer for $10 but i have no idea how yeast works.

LMAO, trunk no offence mate but I don't how things are run where u work but I know that a hell of a lot of installers around here wouldn't know the answers to those questions. In my experience, and the experience of a lot of other people I know car audio installers are not qualified, they are just the younger bros mate, or cousin of some other dude that works in the shop who has dropped outta school.

Now I am sure that where you work things would be different and you obviously know your stuff, but there is a lot of guys out there that don't. I have respect for those who are qualified and do a good job but the others well I won't say what I think of them. Curious though, being in the industry you would know the answer to my question, must companies only employ and allow qualified people to work on customers cars?

after doing that i think i better go check that my gps antenna wires are the right lenth.... oh hang on they were made by some other prick and i just stuck it there.
i figure most of this stuff is to do with design and what we need to do as amature installers is match a to b and make sure c doesnt touch a and b or else the fuse in d will blow and may require an extra $1 on a new fuse because c touched a when it shouldnt have.
sorry if i seem c.unty i just think yes people have different jobs, professions, knowledge. i could install a stereo with good results. you could probably teach a grade 3 class. thats where we are the same. the difference in doing is knowing the reason behind doing.
it sucks that people say anyone could do it. its the same with teaching. everyone thinks they could teach someone something but it doesnt make them a teacher. take it with a grain of salt mate ive learned to.

Julie, what I forgot to mention was that the MECP qualification is an American and British certificate that I own and I dearly think should be instated here in Oz.

There is NO actual qualification here in Australia. When you consider the costs of cars and automotive acessories and the fact that we can be playing god with peoples lives. I think there SHOULD be qualifications. Too many threads about JB and Strathfield prove this....

Heh, if all goes well, I will unleash the Dreaded MASTER Class installer exam onto you all and see how many could pass that. You need a 90% pass.

I think vlv8vic said ot best. He can do it. But, he has no clue what he is doing. Now, no offence John, but would you pay him $48p/hour to install $5000 worth of equipment?

Agree with you 100% about the fact that there should be compulsory qualifications here. When you think about it you are playing with electricity. Electricians have to do an apprenticeship and tafe, forcing them to have decent knowledge and practical skills to safely do their job. Don't see why it should be any different for car audio installers, maybe an apprenticeship is a bit much to ask as they only have to deal with cars but a knowledge and practical exam wouldn't go astray. Whether or not it ever happens is another story altogether, the government would probably see these qualifications as meaning a few more thousand people lining up at centrelink.

It's a scary thought isn't it Michael? I know I can work fumble my way around a circuit board but there is no way I would ever call myself an expert let alone an engineer...

Yep. But as I failed your test, it goes to show that just because I am an engineer does not mean I should be trusted with a 2 grand audio install. Besides I listen to the ABC news radio most days.

Dude. I dunno how some people get their engineering degree hey. I’m currently studying mechatronics at UQ and for our team project last semester two of the people in my group had never seen a bread board before. I thought they were joking when they said “what’s that?”. I don’t know how they passed first year. Or even just recently, in one of our practicals we had to set up various op-amp circuits and measure the characteristics of an op-amp chip. Almost half the class didn’t know how to set up a +15/-15 voltage source to power the chip. I’m embarrassed that the university actually let the pass “intro to electrical engineering”.
