In light of recent posts stating that ANYONE can do the job of an automotive electronics installer. Here is the test to prove if you can or not.

You know, I'm tired of people always saying that anyone can do this job. You can't just pick up a pair of wirecutters and bingo you can install a stereo....theres so much more then stereos as well. If you look at my signature, I state that I'm a MECP Master Class installer. It took me YEARS to get to my level and I'm damn proud of where I am. It only annoys me when people say that anyone can do this job. So, I rummaged around my boxes and I found my MECP BASIC installer qualification. Heres the questions and the multiple choice answers. How would you go?

3, One Volt dropped through a connector will reduce Voltage to the equipment by two Volts (1:2 ratio)
4, One Volt dropped through a connector will reduce Voltage to the equipment by three Volts (1:3 ratio)
5, There is an impact, but it is too low to measure

What are the four different electronic properties you will encounter?
1, Amps, volts, ohms and joules
2, Power, voltage, direct current, alternating current
3, Resistance, voltage, ohms, inductance
4, Voltage, current, resistance, power
5, None of the above

M:4, amps, ohms, joules and volts are units not properties, thus 4.

What is voltage?
1, The rate of electron flow through a given point
2, The electrical pressure that moves charged particles in a circuit
3, The conductivity that various materials possess
4, The relationship between current, resistance and power
5, The conversion of energy into work over a certain period of time

M: Joules per Columb as measured between two points. Closest answer 2??

Which of the following cannot be determined by Ohm's Law?
1, If a certain gauge wire is too small
2, If the voltage supplied to an amplifier is too low
3, If the system requires a more powerful amplifier
4, If a higher output alternator is needed
5, All of the above are correct

M:5

Using a multimeter, you can measure current and voltage, but you cannot directly measure resistance in a live circuit.
1, True
2, False

M:2 not unless you are being really tricky, then you are not using a standard MM

A Watt represents the conversion of one joule per second into:
1, Light
2, Heat

4, All of the above answers are correct

M:4 W=j/s does not matter what it is

1, There is no impact
2, One Volt dropped through a connector will reduce Voltage to the equipment by One Volt
3, One Volt dropped through a connector will reduce Voltage to the equipment by two Volts (1:2 ratio)
4, One Volt dropped through a connector will reduce Voltage to the equipment by three Volts (1:3 ratio)
5, There is an impact, but it is too low to measure

M: 2 Kirchoff said that all voltages around a loop will sum to zero. thus a 1V drop will equal one less volt.

Which of the following is a characteristic of a resistor?
1, Resists the flow of electrons
2, Can be added to a signal cable to reduce the input signal voltage to an amplifier
3, Can reduce the amount of power to a speaker
4, Converts electrical energy to heat
5, All of the above are correct

M:5

An Electrolytic capacitor is known for its excellent sound quality and is used for the higher crossover frequencies.
1, True
2, False

M:2 Electrolytics are polar, no good for bipolar signals.

How do you determine the total resistance of a circuit?
1, Add up all of the resistances
2, Multiply all of the resistances
3, Add the two highest resistances and divide by the lowest resistance
4, divide the voltage into the current
5, multiply the voltage by the current

M: R = V/I I think that is 4, funny wording on this one.

What does a passive crossover for a basic two-way system consist of?
1, Two passive filters
2, One passive filter and one active filter
3, One capacitor for the tweeter and one inductor for the woofer
4, One bandpass filter
5, One passive filter and one relay

M:3

According to Ohm's Law, if you want to calculate current you would:
1, Take the square root of the resistance times the voltage
2, Divide the resistance into the voltage
3, Multiply the resistance and voltage
4, Divide the voltage into the resistance

M: I=V/R 4? again funny wording

1, Always run power and signal leads next to each other
2, Depending on the installation, it is acceptable to cross the battery lead
3, Run the wiring parallel to the car's factory wiring for ease of routing
4, Depending on the installation, it is acceptable to cross the battery lead
5, All of the above answers are correct

M:2 and 4 are the same. Assuming a balanced system, the signal leads should be coupled. I would not want to couple the supply with a signal.

Ground loops are the most frequent cause of noise problems in car audio installations.
1, True
2, False

M:2, ground loops are more a mains problem.

When should you use crimp connectors in installations?
1, Always
2, For the power lead
3, For speaker connections
4, Never

M:1, perhaps anderson plugs for doff doffs

How do you test for alternator whine?
1, Turn the audio system on, turn the volume all the way down, then rev the engine
2, Turn the audio system off, the rev the engine
3, Use a noise sniffer

1, VOM (volt-ohm meter)
2, Test light
3, DMM (digital multimeter)
4, Hydrometer

M:2 assuming the car can flash the code.

If you want to check the amperage draw of a component or security system brain, and the suspect component is not blowing the supplied fuse, you should set your amperage scale on your VOM to a range above the fuse rating of the component.
1, True
2, False

M:1 higer current setting, the lower the meter's shunt value would be, thus the less effect it will have.

Which type of fire extinguisher is best suited for a mobile electronics shop?
1, Type A
2, Type B
3, Type C
4, Halon
5, All of the above are acceptable

M: Halon is now banned. Type A fires most likely. Cars have lots of plastic in them. I would use a dry chemical. CO2 would do SFA and water would be very bad.

What is the first step involved in troubleshooting for system noise problems?
1, Eliminating the source of the problem
2, Identifying the type of noise
3, Determining the various makes and models of products in the system
4, Finding out when the problem was first noticed

M2: can't fix a problem unless you know what it is

All be it so that to be a qualified installer at the basic level u need to know that stuff. it is also true u dont need to knwo that stuff to have a half decent install in your ride. ive done high school physics and can answer most of those questions. However i have installed at least 4 complete stereos for me and my friends it may not be professional standard but it still sounds good and i didnt use any of my physics knowledge. Most of the people on here are asking how to install a stereo because they dont want to pay top dollars to audio shops. Thus meaning they are not after a top quality instalation. SO i believe that any can install a stereo in there ride and get ti to sound half decent. But matching frequencies and working out resistance is another matter and that is why professionals get payed top dollars for install.

Funny thing huh? lol, so far no one would cut it as an installer. Over the next couple of days I will correct all your answers and PM you the results, then once the thread has died down and no one responds to it after awhile, I will post up all your results.

ok well ive put in all my stereos and never had any problems. i also fix my car when things go wrong and dont know jack **** about flow, octane levels or bloody anything. i can make an unreal homebrew and get every plastered on great tasting beer for $10 but i have no idea how yeast works.
anyway if it makes you feel 'special' ill have a go. itll tell me exactly what year 12 chem and physics did = i suck at them both. here goes.

LMAO, trunk no offence mate but I don't how things are run where u work but I know that a hell of a lot of installers around here wouldn't know the answers to those questions. In my experience, and the experience of a lot of other people I know car audio installers are not qualified, they are just the younger bros mate, or cousin of some other dude that works in the shop who has dropped outta school.

Now I am sure that where you work things would be different and you obviously know your stuff, but there is a lot of guys out there that don't. I have respect for those who are qualified and do a good job but the others well I won't say what I think of them. Curious though, being in the industry you would know the answer to my question, must companies only employ and allow qualified people to work on customers cars?
