Crappy auto box needs burning. Actually why not the whole car while we're at it.

My gearbox has been *about* to die for a few months and has gone through several stages of "dying" as of yet..

First off when I got the car it had a tiny tiny slip in third gear which wasn't that noticable. Not being too cashed up I was quoted around $200 for a second hand box but didn't go to rush to grab one straight away as I know of the woes dealing with second hand boxes.. The reverse gear also felt like it'd copped a bit of abuse, but not ever having to drive too far in reverse haha I didn't put too much worry into it.

Next first gear started playing up which would have my baby revving off the clock whilst stuck in first gear and when it finally decided to kick in it gave me a nice case of whiplash in the shoulders.. Manually shifting it into second solved this problem until second gear began to cough and splutter also..

I've been nursing my dying gear box for about two months now.. It was okay today (not okay meaning in working order but okay as in meaning it was working LOL) and tonight when I took my Mom to pick up my younger brother.... It played up like h3ll. Was stuck in first the whole way, manually shifting into ANY gear made no difference whatsoever. I could feel her struggling like she wasn't getting power or fuel. Power and fuel seemed to be working fine but a whole lot of smoke decided to make itself visible... Not from the muffler and not from the engine itself, possibly from the exhaust manifolds but being 10pm, pulled over in the maccas car park with my chocolate sundae on my face.... I just wanted to nurse the POS home.

Gave her another go when we got home just to inspect the problem, let her idle out the back a bit and it seemed fine, no smoke from anywhere no nothing, I put my foot down a bit and it coughed, spluttered and died. She started fine again, drove her cautiously around the block with my engine revving louder than anything but moving at 10 kay an hour.

I have adjusted the accelerator/kickdown cable to change how the thing is holding gear.. It makes no difference.

Any easy fix suggestions to get me 30 km away to work in the morning through peak hour traffic in some very congested suburbs + people that cant drive??

Replace one effed thing, another blows. I feel like crying. And all this bad sh!t seems to happen to the VN at night in the dark when NOTHING is visible.

Well, you have to be prepaired for this, she is an old girl and probablty had a hard life mate. Seems like you got a decent innings out of the gearbox, just get a 2nd hand one for like $300 one from a car with low kays with warrenty. Should last you untill you get rid of her.

The morning brings light......... and the light brings a whole lot of tracks of oil leading to and from my Moms driveway........ up to the grass to where I park my car.........

Which explains why I now have no gears at all. Go figure.

I know the gear box has been replaced in the last five years or so, I can't see the previous owners severely abusing it or anything, although it was mainly used for towing...

Second hand gear box = $150 with three months warranty. Although the dude was hesitant to give me warranty for it... Haha.
