    Yeah, completely agree...

More and more the police is to blame for this and that.

Police are blamed for triggering they BJ Riot, Police are blamed for for pursuit crashes, someone attacks a officer with a weapon and is shot dead, you guessed it, the police are to blame.

It's an absoulte joke... makes me furious.

The police used to me like a pitybull, and crims used to fear them... not they've been muzzler and nuttered why bureaucrat crap.

    Grrr!

cops were just doing their job. people are always bitching cops not do anything, someone steals cars cops chase, it's what should happen. maybe cops should be allowed to deploy more force to bring the fleeing vehicle to stop rather than just following it around until the driver decides to pull over

He was a good bloke was he? Getting his life back on track was he? Oh great way to get your life back on track by stealing a car and killing a family. I can only wish the worst on him, maybe if he survived and stayed a vegetable would have been a better result....

A few years ago I was listening to a police scanner at a friends place in Victoria, we heard the conversation back and forward from the police car back to the station.

The police car was trying to pull over a car in a 70 zone, they had been following it for a fair while and the car wouldn't pull over. They asked back at the base what to do and got told if the car goes over 80 to stop pursuit.

Anyway after about 5 mins of this the car pulled over and it was a old grand mother, she said she didn't know they wanted her to pull over and she was waiting for them to pass her the whole time.

Interesting to see that 2 people have voted for the police being to blame but these individuals haven't posted a reason for their choice.

Probably people that can't take responsibility for their own actions and it's always someone else's fault but their own.......

Well clearly is the guy that hit the car's fault but it also would never have happened if the Police followed the guidelines for chases. They are there for a reason, in the past this kind of thing used to happen all the time, when Police give up the chase once it's dangerous for the public it doesn't happen and that's what they are supposed to do. For whatever reason they didn't and there will be questions asked as to why not

it is actually being tested in SA about getting a patrol car close enough behind the offenders car to fire a GPS tracker into the rear bumper of the car and then giving it space and trying to acquire ware it will stop!

How can you say it would have never happened if police had ended the chase earlier?

From the article, my understanding is that it was this guys speeding and driving that caught the attention of the police in the first place.

So he would have been speeding through that traffic light one way or another.

The chase was called off? The accident did not happen while in pursuit. Almost always foam when police follow guidelines this happens.

Police chases almost always prove why speed isnt an issue on our roads until lack of concentration kicks in. Look at how many pursuits end in a major accident AFTER the case is called off. The drivers must relax, let their guard down and wham.

I just checked who voted on the 2nd option, cannot say I am surprised.

They called it off once they saw the red lights minux, way way too late. Before Police used to call off chases they chased a car right into the main street of Portland the resulting crash(es) killed several people and left the main street on fire so we are well aware of the safety problem of doing this around here. The only time you are likely to push yourself way beyond your limits is racing someone or trying to get away from the Police. Still like I said it's not the fault of the Police but it wouldn't have happened, at least not at this much speed or this deadly if they hadn't of chased them. Just leave it to the powers to be to sort it out, you'll find that the pursuit guidelines will be hardened again as they should be after it goes wrong like this

How sad. This is the core issue in my opinion on what is wrong in the world today. Everyone is being taught their rights and not their responsibilities. If the Police indicate to me to pull over I have a responsibility to obey an Officer of the law, and would do so.

These little bastards however don't care about being responsible. They do what they please, then when **** goes down it's all about who is in the right and who should be held accountable. This is when they scream blue murder and claim it's the cops fault for scaring them and making them run.

How about literally drag them by their hair down to the morgue and slam their heads repeatedly against the viewing glass and force them to see the result of their actions. Then turn them over to the grieving family for an hour.

Actually it was called off AFTER the offenders ran a red light, which I dare say would be a pretty normal time to call it off as clearly they are willing to disregard any public members safety at any cost. The time released by ACT policing is "minutes" between running a red light and the accident. So in that time span I think police have called it off at the right time. it is not he police fault that morons run, it is not their fault that these morons put others lives in danger. It is the offenders fault and the offenders fault only. he could of stopped at ANY time but chose not to. I just hope that the woman that survived will be charged with some sort of association charge relevant to the deaths of the innocent road users.

Damn straight, checking osme of the interviews with this stupid bitch of a mother...

Innocent people are not dying from chases you stupid bitch, theya re dying because deadbeat sons like your daughters boyfriend are KILLING them running form police.

lol, young coppers? Police force must be full of hoons now...as for Justin may have had a bit to do with it, well duh, he STOLE SOMEONES CAR, he had EVERYTHING to do with it.

No what led him to killing these innocent people was the fact he did not pull over, nothing more, nothing less.

Erm police should be charged for upholding the law? This woman is clearly derranged and should be mentally hospitalised.

    As did I and ditto.

All the comments on the police should have been called off earlier, I don't understand this logic. It wouldn't have happened if the scumbag hadn't broken the law in the first place.

And ok, say the police called off the chase earlier but because the guy was 'scared' at the next quite set of lights he car-jacked another car and put a crowbar to their face because they tried to fight him off causing brain damage to the victim.

Then, we would have people blaming the police for NOT chasing the guy which COULD have prevented the new outcome.

There are many if's/but's/maybes in this situation. The one thing that CANNOT be disputed is that if the idiot hadn't stolen the car in the first place, this family would still be alive.

    Beyond that, everything is speculation.

Article containing quotes from the interview with the mother:

Canberra crash death mother blames police

The stupidity is absolutely amazing. Seriously, there needs to be some sort of IQ test before you are allowed to breed.

Otherwise, chemical castration. It would solve SO many problems...

    Big call, greenfoam.

The detail will come out through the coroner's enquiry in due course. In the meantime, it would be foolish speculation to assert that the police were tardy in calling off the pursuit.

This particular incident might not have happened if the police had not entered the chase. However, once the pursuit has commenced, the fleeing driver is only likely to slow when he feels safe, which is likely to be well after the police have ceased active pursuit.

I agree with the vast majority. I am saddened by the unnecessary and wasteful loss of innocent lives. I do not have the full facts, but I have read or seen nothing that pushes blame towards the police. Even if they had made a judgement of error and called the pursuit off a bit later than they should/could have, the blame rests solely on the head of the driver of the fleeing vehicle. That is not an act that “the young just do”, but an act of wanton disregard for the welfare and property of others in society. Those who exhibit such character flaws do not deserve the freedoms inherit in our society. And the job of the police is hard enough as it is without them having to wear the blame that rightly rests with criminals.

Actually, I've been thinking a bit more about what I consider to be the irrational argument that police should not pursue criminals because of the risk of collateral damage.

In effect, those who flee the police, and those who give tacit support, are holding the general community as hostage. The criminals are effectively saying, "Catch me if you can, and if you chase me, YOU have to accept the risk of injury to innocent parties".

Effectively, that is holding society at large as hostage, just like holding a gun at the head of an innocent bystander. It is what hardened or stupid criminals do, not simple skylarking by little boys. Or in the kindest words that I can come up with, LOW LIFE!!!
