How would someone go about putting a Calais or berlina cruise control system into a standard commodore? and what does it cost?
Depends! I had the cruise control installed in my VS S2 manual when I bought it. I got the kit cheap at $317, brand new. I had it installed by a Holden mechanic for $60, which also included moulded mud flaps and headlight protectors. Took just over an hour for all three tasks. Was worth it for the warranty cover. Mine was helped by having the correct loom already, I expect courtesy of the dual airbags/ABS/IRS options, which meant it had the same loom as the Acclaim. The kit had a patch harness, which was not needed in my case. If you have to correct loom, then it is easy. Just get the bits and install. I think mine ven had the mounting point in the engine bay. However, if you don't have the correct loom, then I believe it requires drilling of the firewall to facilitate the necessary electrical modifications. I suspect, but am not sure, that ABS present is the key to the correct loom.
nah i dont want an aftermarket one , i wanna get one with the new indicator arm and make it a genuine holden part...
Wreckers or Ebay I have seen both the cruise control module and the control "arm" on Ebay occasionally. You will also require a disconnect switch for the brake, (and clutch if it is a manual). You require all of these for sure. My car did not need any new wiring as the connectors were already there. I know that this is not guaranteed because the "kit" I bought had a patch harness with it, so obviously some cars will require new electrical work. My throttle mount had a location for the cruise control throttle wire. I think all do, but I am not sure. If you buy from a wrecker, they should be able to supply all the bits that you need. I always thought sruise control was a gimmick until I got one. Once I had it, I realized how often I was looking at my speedo. With my cruise control set and the speed alert just above (as a safety check), I find I now just watch the road and traffic. Driving is so much more relaxing now. Contrary to popular suggestion, I find that I can use mine in traffic if I anticpate. I toggle up and down (counting the taps to keep a tab of speed changes) as needed. Six taps = 10 KPH on the Vs, and five taps for the VY. Like altitude alert on aircraft, I don't know how I would survive without it now.
hey i m doing the same thing and i got the stuff of ebay and am going to install it any day now but will need to get the brake switch every one is talking about, wonder how mcu hit is. cheers Alen
About $10 When I had the cruise control fitted back in 1997, I needed an extra switch for the clutch pedal. Cost was $8 back then.
It's worth it if you don't have a steady foot or if you do a lot of freeway driving. Otherwise, I really can't see the appeal.
Love cruise. Got a genuine fitted by the dealer once UI could afford it. It saves fuel. Saves you legs and it's great rolling up a hill past all of those who can't!
Putting your foot on the accelerator can do that too - how does it save fuel? Consistent throttle or something?
Cruie changes fuel flows revs and transmission change points to allow better fule economy. Throttle changes to allow the speed maiantenance but the changes are so dramatic as if throttling manually. Travelling Melbourne to bright in the same car with and without cruise I saved a 1/8th of a tack or more and my ankle now works fine!
can you get cruise control for autos? ... just wondering that's all cause im started to get interested in it
The switch I used was a ordinary brake light switch of any vn/p.The hole is already there in the bracket...all you need as well is the round clip that the switch locates into also on any vn/p commodore and you use the rear contacts for cruise.
I looked into it the other day - spoke with Holden and various auto electricians. Unless u have ABS fitted to your car from the factory (i.e. u have an executive without it) then u don't have the proper wiring harness for everything to just plug in. So u then need to purchase a harness as well as the cc setup, and its a nightmare job I was told and hardly worth it for the cost in labour. Aparently genuine cc packs aren't available anymore from holden (but if anyone finds one le me know!) so u need to be careful buying old used ones. Not very knowledgable on these things but this is what I was told after a lot of ringing around
They are still available from GMH Parts. Unless in the last 10 months they've run out. Mine was aftermarket, genuine and fitted by a Holden dealer.
If anyone knows where I can still find a new factory cruise kit please let me know and how much. I rang some of the Holden dealers here in Brisbane and they said it wasn't on their parts list anymore and not available. So if anyone here's of a stash anywhere at a Holden dealer or anywhere else, give me a shout. You can pick up second hand ones from wreckers fairly easily, but a bit risky for reliability - would prefer a new one if i can get one cheers
Penfold Holden Parts in Melbourne found them for me and Alan Mance both had them. Holden Parts Operations is in Melbourne anyway.
